you not fancy having a go at it yourself with the help of some mates? :) much cheaper... then you can spend the remaining £££ on something pretty

i've just had a 200tdi engine, box and back axle fitted and it cost me £1500

wish i'd done it myself now, though i've not got the space to do it so it would have to have been done in the street.

Actually fitting the engine is the easiest part of the operation (I've done this conversion 4-times). Air filtration etc is the most awkward unless you buy ready-made pipes. You can also buy the downpipe conversion. There are a few fiddly bits that take up time, but with a bit a patience it's not beyond someone who's reasonably good with tools.

Les.

Hi Tom, I see you're in Worcs.

I've a 90 TD and will want to fit a TDI at some stage. I live just outside Evesham.

If you do fancy giving it a go yourself I'd be happy to come and lend however much of a hand I am able to. Would be good to see how it's done.

If space is the problem, I wouldn't mind if you wanted to use a bit of our driveway?

For that much money I'd expect a proper Defender 200Tdi engine to be fitted... not a Disco lump.

I've recently fitted one for DerbysRed (Chris) on here and the total price was less than £2000.... infact was less than £1500 I think - I didn't supply all the parts...

A Disco 200Tdi engine can be had for anything between £400 and £700 and then about £200 (ish - inc labour) for a proper cambelt replacement - new belt, idlers, all oil seals etc etc.  Headgasket (don't see why you would bother changing this unless needed) but again would be a £200 (inc labour) so your looking at £1100 max for the engine... so £900 minimum labour - a bit steep for something that doesn't take that long - although compared to a Defender spec engine fitting a Discovery one is more involved... and always looks messy IMHO.

Paid 1100 for a 200tdi defender with a completely shot chassis, reckon all my conversion to date works out at 250ish as i managed to sell lots to recoup costs as well as help out several mates with odds n sods for free. but if you havent the space to break a motor 2000 in and running with a guarantee??? sounds okish

Cheers Steve

bro in law bought a K plate disco with a rotten chassis for £500. took the 200tdi out plus all of the other bits need, rad, intercooler pipes, engine loom, air filter assembly etc etc.

fitted it all in the ninety in 2 days with a £120 steve parker downpipe.

sold the remaining bits of the disco for £350.

so a tdi conversion for less than £300 - thats value for money!

Almost makes the £6.5K I paid for a new Defender 300TDi repower kit sound like a lot of money!

I swapped the old 2.5TD in my 110 for a disco 200TDi last year.

Cost something like this.........

Disco 200TDi engine, rad, inter cooler, fuel filter etc £450
Piston rings, big end & main bearings, gaskets £120
Head Skim £40
Steve Parker exhaust down pipe £120
Silicone hose joiners, bends and clips £70
Nuts, Bolts, Oil and other odds and sods £50

Total cost £850

If you are having a defender spec 200TDi fitted then you will be paying allot more than you would for a disco lump.

I did all the work myself and took me about a week, on and off in between going to work. Even with a professional mechanic i reckon it will be a couple of days work, so the labor will make up a good lump of the quote.
Regards
Matthew
