Wondering whether to get another 90 or a crewcab and modify it to the hilt... OR go for a Tomcat/Wildcat??


What would you guys choose?

I say a crewcab 110 because there just different but it all depends what your going to use it for.

Those crewcabs can look really good once kitted up.

Whats the new 4x4 going to be used for then mainly offroading i suppose if your liking the tomcats etc?  :?

Yeah.... purely offroad. whether its a 90/110 or tomcat.

Competition...... still cant make up my mind :?  As i'm also thinking of resale value for my next project next year.

just looking at the tomcat web page and how their made,my question is how heavy are they? all that steal tubing on top of the orignal chassi can not be light? surely?
So off roading surely thats a slight disadvantage?

I cant find an un-balasted weight :?  :? . From what i can gather the F.I.A. specify a minimum weight for vehicles entering competitions.... So, can any of you guys answer the question... "whats the un-balasted weight of a wildcat & tomcat?"

That only applies to FIA events - the Dakar, the European BAJA series (including BAJA GB) etc. It is related to engine size - I'm sure that the info used to be on the Bowler website, but can't see it at the moment

For National events, like the BORC and Hillrallies (links in sig), and club comp safaris there is no minimum weight.

No idea what regs there are for challenge type events.

Tomcats have no 'standard' weight, as it depends on whose built it and how flimsy / strong it is. I'm gonna my neck on the line and say there are some pretty badly built Tomcats out there too. A reliable car can be put together for 1400kg upwards. Typically though you can add 100kgs+ to that. Then there's all the 'off-road' kit.

An unballasted V8 Wildcat is about 1500kg without fuel, IIRC, but they aren't really a challenge type machine for a host of reasons. Where do you stick a winch for a start?

A good 2nd Wildcat will cost from about £12k upwards. A 200 will set you back about £20k. A poor one isn't worth picking up...... Accesories don't just bolt on and if you want attach anything that wasn't there in the first place, you need to be profficient at welding T45 tube.

Given the two and the application you've suggested, the Tomact offers a more familiar starting point. However, if it was my money, given your entire range of parameters including affordability and the like, and whats wins the most challenges, I'd personally buy a 90 and go from there.  8)

Would agree with Eeyore's rule of thumb on weights - Tomcats despite the steel work will usually run out quite a lot lighter than a 90.

John Cockburn told me that he reckoned that the new Tomcat works car is aiming for below 1000kgs! :shock:  It will be something a bit special.

In my opinion to have a Wildcat or a Tomcat and then not to race it would be a waste! :wink:

Space frame with live axles - we'll see what weight it turns out, but it is sure to be interesting and fast.  Remember the last two vehicles were just test rigs for this one.  This is the combination of alot of thinking.  Will be interesting to see on BORC.

Banyard's mini is emphatically not a Rivet - he is very proud to say that it is an entirely British take on a French theme.  I tried to persuade him he ought to do Y Rali Bryn Cymru and bring some of his French friends.

id say 110! everyone mods 90s for off roading, and as someone else has said, tomcat/wildcat are really racers...

110 might be more difficult to get to awkward places, but its bloody good fun trying it and even better when you do it :D
