Modding disco - update
« on: February 10, 2007, 17:32:18 »
OK, my list of parts is slowly growing...

I have (to collect yet) +2" Britpart yellow springs and 265/75/16 BFG Mud Terrains, still needing brake hoses and shocks (might have to pay new prices at this rate!!)

How easy are the springs to fit, I have played with all makes of cars over the years but apart from twisting the torsion bars to lower by beetle I have never played with suspension, do you need a spring compressor or is releasing the shocks and drooping the wheel enough to take off the old bog standard ones and fit the new ones?

Any more hints and tips appreciated

Very easy to change springs just undo the anti roll bars and lift the car up by the chassic and the spring will just fall out so to speak. Thats all i had to do with mine to put a 1" lift on

Tip: Get a new pair of shocker turret retaining rings before you start as the bolts on these always snap.
These sit on top of the front springs and hold the shocker turret in place.

It's easier to release the bottom of the front shockers and then remove the turret, taking the both out of the vehicle from inside the engine bay. Then you can replace the spring, and lower the new shocker (already connected to the turret) back into place.

Your main problems are going to be releasing the old shockers, but you can either cut the nuts off (if you're not going to use them again) or get a pair of Stillsons to grip the shock as you undo the nut.
Also the plate that retains the bottom of the rear springs can be difficult, just soak everything with WD40 from a few days before you do the work.

If you are changing lines then undo them and use the car bottle jack on the axle to chassis. This pushes it down enough to fit spring
I can sort a 4 line kit for £50 delivered ??

i would like to add some questions here, i have a set of 265/75/16's from my old 90, and want to fit to my Disco. I am about to start looking into getting the required kit for lifting, as my springs/shocks have had it, so my question is, what would be recommended.

I presume 2" springs, and shocks, extended brake hoses, (i have seen comments abut retaining rings and made note, cheers) i need new bump stops so will get extended ones. with the bottom of the front bumper removed, and the back archers adjusted will this be enough?

In time i will be replacing the front bumper, and looking at fitting rock sliders too?

oh, and how well will it handle on road with no ARB's and no caster correction?

I Hope i am not taking over post? Any suggestions welcome, thanks.

That should be enough, maybe watch the lip inside the wheelarches incase they catch but you can just fold them double and it'll be fine.

As for handling, with only a +2" lift ou maybe fine. Best to fit the kit and see what it's like. Make sure you explain to the supplier that you intend removing the ARB's as they should be able to supply you with the correctly rated spring so that the body roll isn't that bad.

Failing that, you could put 2" spacers under the ARB's chassis connection and then you can keep them on there.
