just a little advise needed..............
« on: February 11, 2007, 06:49:43 »
Ok, here we go

I have a suzuki sj(hold back on the jap crap owners comments) for the last 18months but now I'm thinking of changing it for a 90.

Basically I after a bit of advise to look out for other than the rott in chassis and bulkhead.

And what are you views on tdi's and n/a? Which do you prefer and why? I know that your get better road speeds out of a tdi, but is that the only advantage? What about servicing and repairs?

Also, as I got kids I could do with option of the extra seats in the back. Does anyone konow the legalities of thessideways facing seats? And incase I cant get a station wagon style landy are the seats a basic bolt in bolt out?

Many thanks for any advise.
Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark,

Forget the NA diesel, its awful and the TD isnt much better. The good engines (some say best) are the 200 and 300 TDi's followed by the TD5 (my preferred engine).

The TDi's are light years ahead of the NA and TD engine, and the TD5 is a different beast again. If you go for an early TD or worse an NAD then youll be looking to spend about £1500 on upgrading to a tdi within weeks!

As for seats, side facing is legal however you cannot use child seats so your kids need to be over the min height (cant remember) for them to be legal for use. Depending on how many kids you got, forward facing might be an option for you.

Thanks smo for getting back to me, its always worth getting good advise for the people who know the cars and have tried and tested them.

One of the lads on another forum said go for the n/a as the tdi's only last 100,00mls and are alot more expensive when work is needed on them.
Thanks again and if anyone else cares to voice their opinion, please feel free, the more the merrier

Thanks again

I've owned all three.....My 90 started life as a TD, horrible dirty smelly unreliable, changed to a NA diesel as it was available, slow, noisy but a superbly reliable engine and cant fault it, its now a TDI simply for more power and ease for towing the family caravan etc, The TDI is by far the best 200k miles easy if looked after, a NA diesel next on the list and bottom of the pile below pushing the landy comes the TD :)

ditto that ^^^^^^^^^^^^

I dont think we should be so harsh to rthe Td tho we all they are a brillant engine for that 10seconds before a rod comes through the side of the block   go like stink   :D

A TDi will outlast most of your chassis if its serviced them lasting 100k is complete twoddle.
if you you can make it i can break it.

NA is low output, (after all, it's just a longer stroke 2.25 Litre Diesel found in a Series!)
TD has a reputation of going suicidal sometimes,
TDi is exceptionally good and will do 200k fine.  It's the TD that usually blows around 130k if it's going to go bang.

The TDi is also the highest performing engine all round that is completely mechanical.  The Td5 uses some electronics, although not an awful lot.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA perhaps not... ours is on over 175k!

if you can afford it, get a 200tdi. cheaper than a 300 and just as reliable and easy to work on if not more so. they will also shift at an alarming rate (well, in the scheme of things) with a bit of subtle and easy to do tweaking.

the N/A engines are pretty good if they're looked after and they'll last a long time... they're just as slow as hell freezing over. it will keep you going if worst comes to worst, but you will wanna swap it to a tdi eventually!

That was the TD i was refering to Mark. The Tdi is a wonderful thing. I have ine in my Disco, and i wouldnt change it for the world. Powerful, easy to tweak and reliable. Aswell as 30 to the gallon all day long.

The n/a is a super engine. I have one in my 110, and i dont think other than changing the injectors when i got it i have had to touch it. Do the Tappets every 10,000mls and keep it well serviced. I know Tdi's are better, but i bet my n/a will still be going strong long after the alluminium on the Tdi has rotted away.

As for the speed. You get used to it. I find in the 110 i cruise at 50 all day long, and in the Disco your up to 60-70, then back down, so over an average thereisnt much in it. All your really doing is wearing your tyres, brakes, clutch, drivetrain out faster. :)

Just my opinion as i have Both. :D

Must admit mate I used to run a 2.5 N/A in my 90 it lasted in there fro about 6 months 45mph with tyres on the roof rack comming back from drumclog in the rain with Wagons overtating you on the M6 is no fun at all.....

So I have fit a 200TDI in now from a disco ( Landyloonys Old one ).
Its brill. I also done the 3 tweaks to the pump and it goes like stink.
I also have a 300tdi in the 110CSW and thats just a bit quieter but only a little. The 200tdi and 300tdi are easy to repair as they are just a diesel engine , No computers involved at all. It still gets me when ya see a 2.5 N/A 110 advertised I just dont understand how the engine would pull a bigger motor mine was POO even after a Landrover Tec turned the pump up it was not alot better. So 200TDi or 300TDi vote from me mate.

My dad's TD lasted 247K and it was worked hard from day 1. So they are not bad.
In it's lifetime it was on it's 4th clutch, 2nd turbo, 2nd injector pump. The head has never been off, the injectors have never been changed either! I have head of many TDI's far less reliable than that!

It would tow 3.5 ton, would do 80 when pushed. most happly cruised at 65. (and has done on the M5 south with a 109 on a flat bed ifor) Good engine i say. Everyone goes on the hearsay that goes about concerning the TD.
The engine condcerned after it started knocking (suspect big end) after doing such milage is now awaiting to be rebuilt and wll go in either mine or my little brothers series 2.

We replaced it with a recon TD, and now that is going strong.

Doesn't really matter to me how good the TD5 is or isn't......  Its dearer than a TDi in general (Yes i know early Td5 can be cheaper than late TDi which kinda tells a story) and the TDi is gods own engine, Landys don't need to go any faster than a TDi does, they have no elecktrickery to fail and do huge mileages, mine will never be sold......

Devon - Rover...

Sorry, but to say everyone goes on hearsay for the TD...hmmm, as stated I've owned all of em, if you had a TD that would do 80 mph for any length of time without dying then I'd buy a new speedo, they are a  way overstressed rehash of the NA, not by hearsay but by the fact that they die left right n centre on a regular basis should be enough, you may have been incredibly lucky with your first, but the engine is crap, it was an interim measure at best, a york diesel will go forever if looked after very very very very well...doesnt mean its a good engine.. :)

people go on hearsay?..... hearsay has to originate somewhere and for some reason,
the original poster stated he heard that the tdi will last for only 100k miles and straight away a multitude have jumped in to defend it left right n centre..

odd the TD doesnt seem to have been defended at all :) and that includes from people like myself with a fair bit of first hand expeirience of mine and other TD's

If you do have  a TD then whatever you do dont get mud semi blocking the rad..overheating is its real achilles heel..

Cheers Steve

Thanks again for all the advise. It was my mistake, I miss read Sharpshooters reply on the other forum, he did say it was the td's that have there problems. My aploigies.

reading up in the landrover magazines it does seem that the tried and tested engines like the 200tdi seem to be the way forward for me. I not only need great off road ability, i also need it use it as a second car as it will have to replace my golf gti and the suzuki.

I am possibly asking on the wrong part of the forum, but does anyone have any opinions on the discovery 200tdi? Its the same engine as in the defender, and i no its dimentions are larger with larger overhang etc, but its off road a bility from what I have seen seems good. Is it heavier than the defender? Any other pro's and cons on it?

as a personal choice I think i would rather go for a defender, but I am slightly guided by price.

thanks again for the great adise

I am a defender owner and they are the best without a doubt.

BUT the discovery is very good it has its problems but so what you get a nice ride and a interior in a discovery. Discoverys drag there tow bar on steep climbs but other than that they are a bit heavyer and rot alot faster than the defender but yes they are tops off road and have the sbest engine in with a 200tdi or 300tdi.
