If you look at the rear of the cluster you'll see that one section is blanked off. You can use this one for the tail lights.
Remove the cluster from the vehicle, cut the plastic blanking plate out and you should be left with a hole that a standard bulb holder will fit into (including cut-outs for the locking lugs).
On the main cluster wiring plug, work out which terminal feeds that light and run an extended wire from the bumper taillight wire into the connector on the cluster. You can get a female spade connector to push into the main wiring plug.
Put the bulb in a new holder and connect the wiring.

That should be it.

You can do a similar thing with the foglights on a mk2 golf uk models have the fog on the o/s but if you knockout the blanking plug on the n/s you get twin rear fog lights

Can't see any reason why not, it would save cutting the blank out and you just need to rewire it.

I did it as I described above so I had seperate tail & brake lights.

If you take the inside cover off the rear of the cluster, so you can get at the bulbs, there are two black plastic nuts at the top & bottom of the cluster. You should be able to undo these by hand and the cluster will come out from outside the vehicle.

I had a feeling they would be something similar to what you have described. I have a 7 seater and it seems a right pain to get your hand in and find the back cover. It is a pitty I am not double jointed!!!

Yeah, I was just talking about doing that, having the type of clusters that HAVE indicators on the columns, so I wouldn't have to rely on the ones in the bumper.  My local shop has a set of used ones off a breaker he'd let me have cheap, so I may as well, eh?

Given the enormous freight charges to Japan, I'm toying with the idea of trying to build my own front and rear bumpers.  My wife's uncle has a welding shop, which is a big help as I have absolutely NO experience in that sort of thing.  I was thinking of making them out of Stainless.  Is there a reason that I can't seem to find any stainless bumpers for sale?

I agree with Mick, just change the cluster if you can, shouldn't cost much from a scrapper, worth bearing in mind that a set from a Maestro van will fit!

But, like me, he only wants the upper set of tail lights, not the indicators.

Just a case of running a new wire to the correct bulb instead of buying two complete new clusters.

The only big red coaches I can think of belong to Harris Coaches and I think they have a new(ish) one, do you know if it was on of their's?
