This may be a silly question but is there supposed to be oil in the outer bearing that has washed all the grease out ,on an '82 rr?

I'd put money on it mr arse-welder :)

The not-so-bad news is that the oil will protect the bearing so it's not a life-threatening failure but the first thing to check is that the axle breather is not blocked and that the swivel housing has the correct amount of oil in it.

Try the one-shot grease in your swivles if you decide it's worn seals as it tends to migrate less.

Once you have found the culprit clean and repack the hub bearings, you cannot trust the outer seal to keep all the oil out though, they aren't that good.

What is this one shot grease stuff and where do you put it,I thought oil went into your swivels hence the fill up plug and level and drain plug ??

It is a tube of grease that replaces the oil in your swivels.
When the swivel seals leak out all your oil and the pits in the swivel keep wrecking new seals, the grease is a thicker viscosity so less prone to leaks creating a cheap easy soloution  :wink:

On the hub there is a big plug near the top with approx 14mm square head. This is where you fill the hub (on full lock if using "one shot").  The small plug approx 8mm half way down is the fill level.  Both face the front on both sides.

There is a seal between the axel and hub to keep Diff oil and hub oil seperate as long as steering swivel seals are OK its not a major problem.  If swivel seals are leaking then it is a problem as you will eventually end up with no oil in front diff.

Aha,so the grease as has been said is a quicker option other than stripping the swivels to change the seal or the swivel its self,did a swivel overhaul on my mates Disco last week,didn't take that long I thought although it wasn't the seal or swivel that needed changin it was the CV joint after him losing all forward motion followed by a rather nasty crunch/bang/tight stearing wheel episode  :oops:  :oops:  :oops:

I regreased bearings after fitting new discs,put it back together ,checked oil levels and all is well.Plenty of diff oil ,I may have over filled swivels afew months ago asthe front end was jacked up .I would have thought any oil in bearings would come from swivels as there doesnt seem to be an oil seal to stop this. :? Thanks for help chaps.

The oil seal between the swivel and the bearings is the one you see as soon as you remove the wheel bearing nuts, it's on the outside of the hub (unless you have ABS axles).
