No, if it wasnt the police then they dont have the authority to ticket anyone, sounds like the usual vilage anti's in yelloy jackets with either a real, or a blue peter mock-up camera to scare motorists.

used to have a few old gits around here with speed guns, normally get two warnings then a copper pays a visit.

If they are like the ones here the old gits can't hold the camera still and point so not sure if taking your speed, the house opp or the plane in the sky

It looked like a real camera. 2 old woman yellow coats and a clip board. You would think they would have something better to do like rebuild a 4x4 and have fun life is to short

where was it? probably just trying to scare you if they didnt look like real officials.

I've seen a fake wooden speed camera in one village once! (looked convincing till you got close! - it didnt seem to be there for long though! ;) )

we have them near us they take your speed if your speeding and the reg of the vehicle and send it to plod, repeat offenders get a visit from plod but i dont know what they can do about it, whether they can ticket you or not :?   maybe one of the forum constables can shed some light.
its very funny with the v8 if i know they are there, i put it in low box and race up the gears so it sounds like i,m screaming up the road and when i round the corner i,m doing bang on 30

Well, one option would be not to break the law in the first place

If you don't like the speed limit, then campaign to get it changed, but it always surprises me how people don't like it when the law is upheld.

I cant see it standing up for a fine if there "unoficial"    Otherwise i could report someone for an offence and get them fined (now there is a good idea    )  But i guess it would be more of a "scare"/reporting type issue .

There's one of those fake gatsos in a village here. They've had to re-erect it once due to some people taking offence and pulling it down. Complaints were made to the police as it was causing people who didn't know it was there to hit the anchors, whether they were within the speed limit or not.

It now has bird feeders hanging off it.

Hi,

what it is is a community speed watch scheme and i do this in my village.

i live on a road that is a rat run for commuters wanting to miss the A453.  i have concrete bollards  outside my house on the edge of the pavement to stop the morons driving on the pavement instead of the road.  these were put there after a child was killed walking on the pavement by a car driver who decided that driving on the pavement was better than waiting for a space to get thru.

it is a 30 zone - in 1 1/2 hours we have noted 20 cars going over 40.  every time we have to cross the road (my sister in law & kids live across the road and we take it in turns to take the kids to school) we literally take our lives in our hands due to the speed of the vehicles.

nearly every vehicle that parks on this road has been damaged by the cars and buses that speed down it - and surprise surprise - no one ever stops to let you know.  one classic was my sister in law had a policeman come to her house and said that he was following a car which broadsided her car and continued driving.  her car was damaged - but the car that hit her not only had to pay for her car (so he should) but also got done for failing to stop!

if you don't speed - you don't get caught.  we are not killjoys - we are only trying to make our kids safe.

hi

forgot to mention - regos get sent to police and you get a letter from them telling you that you were caught by community speedwatch, no fine but a request to slow down next time

Were you breaking the speed limit? If so those "goody too shoes" are probably fed up to the back teeth with folk like you endangering their lives with excess speed, and have decided to do something about it. Next time it will be the police if the locals prove enough speeders go through at certain times of the day. Take it as a warning and slow down.

If you were not speeding why worry?

The road goes from a 60 to a 30 and they sit on the boarder. So they detect you in the 60 but do they put it down has a 30. I was slowing down and was doing 37 in the 60 then 30 in 30

I have to say when I first saw the heading 'Village People with Speed Camera', I had visions of 5 camp guys dressed up doing speed checks! What a mental picture that made!

Sorry, I didn't mean to be flippant.

In relation to the discussion, I will now throw my bit in as a Plod. I can fully understand peoples wish to decrease the number of speeders through inhabited areas.
My personal view is that we should not have to rely on volunteers from the community to do the work of the Police.
The Police should be doing the speed checks not volunteers, who could be put at risk by drivers who take offence at what they are doing.
There should be more beat Police officers out to deal with the local speeding issues.
There should be more Traffic Police Officers out doing speed checks and acting as a visible deterrent, which is far more effective (but not cheap) than cameras.
Let the Police do the Job.

Perhaps I should become an MP?

The first photo is the officer who was not happy with my interest
The second photo is one I should not have taken apparently, as the photos were confidential even though he was situated in a Bus Stop....Where people congregate :?

Third photo is the safety partnership van that has blue lights behind the grill......Not sure but I thought only emergency response vehicles were allowed these :?

In general he was not happy at all having his photo taken, he asked for my camera and demanded my camera, I told him if he wanted it he would have to take it off me, he declined my offer  ....I wonder why

Another one we've had here. Once when plod was down in the village doing speed checks, someone went up to him and said something along the lines of "nice to see you up here keeping speeds down for a change.". The response he got was "Not much point me being here, within 5 minutes of me setting up everyone knows I'm here.". Wonderful attitude to have. Just shows the mentality that it's nothing to do with providing a deterrent, it's about collecting the cash.

I wouldn't quite say it's an adverse mentality, more being realistic. Everyone knew he was there, therefore they slowed down, I would guess. Job done.

At risk of stirring a hornet's nest, I agree with you 110%

It would be nice to have the police do it, but unfortunately they are tied up doing paperwork, and not given enough time on the beat.

Yes, him being there has achieved that, but my point was that he felt that he was wasting his time sitting there, as he was unable to catch anyone, whereas even if unable to catch anyone speeding surely they should have some pride that they've prevented people from speeding for the couple of hours they've sat there, not simply say "There's no point us being here.".

Public domain, surely.  And why is it these guys are allowed to park wherever they want? as an instructor I find it laughable that the 'safety partnershipo' van is parked in a bus stop/on a kerb/ ina cysle lane/at a junction/on a crossing.  Mind you I'm a swine, if I see them parked up I like to park behind them

Seriously though, it's 30 for a reason, our road was built as a cul-de-sac and then opened up to thtough traffic some years after, so it's narrow but it's also everyones personal short-cut to save 0.05 seconds form their journery time.  I've lost 2 mirrors this year on one car, one by a Tesco delivery van (and I never got the money  ).  It's not just yourng lads either, you should see the mum's taxis in the afternoon.

A letter to the Telegraph described the Danish system for speed cameras:

First you get the screen that tells you your speed if over limit
Then I think if you haven't slowed down you get a red light to stop you
Jump that and you get a ticket

Something like that

That sounds a much better system than ours but not as much revenue.

I don't mind speed limits
I try to obey them
But you can drift to 33 on good empty roads and then have to slow to 30 again
That's not really too awful in my view, regrettable but not awful.
Our system = prosecution
Danish system = Warning and then prosecution if you still don't act

Mike

Well, you could argue that the warning in this country is the round sign with "30" written in it.  But I do see your point...  around here (we're near the Transport Research Laboratory if that makes any difference) I see fewer speed cameras and a lot more of the flashing-sign things.  They do seem to make a difference, but I'm not sure how long it will be before everybody is used to them and ignores them.

What DOES seem to work is the "average speed" systems they often seem to use in roadworks now.

You could modify our own system so that the first time you were caught, the computer sent out a warning, and only if you did it again would you be fined.  But you could view those times when you've passed a speed camera and it hasn't flashed as your warning.  :o
