The reason I prefer the system I described is because you're over the limit and get a dig in the ribs to let you correct yours ways and then get a tcket if you don't.

Rather like a cop wagging a finger or flashing his lights? Ignore that at your peril.

Treating us like grown ups I'd say.

Mike

I wouldn't quite say it's an adverse mentality, more being realistic. Everyone knew he was there, therefore they slowed down, I would guess. Job done.

Yes, him being there has achieved that, but my point was that he felt that he was wasting his time sitting there, as he was unable to catch anyone, whereas even if unable to catch anyone speeding surely they should have some pride that they've prevented people from speeding for the couple of hours they've sat there, not simply say "There's no point us being here.".

It is very difficult to comment on what the train of thought of the officer was.
Having done the very same task that you describe, my way of thinking was simple.
I would always 'verbally warn' people first off. Prevention is better than punishment.
If there were continued breaches, then it would be ticket time.
Perhaps that is what he meant, that he hadn't caught anyone to warn them.
Perhaps I am ever the optimist.

I remember a report on the local news a little while back.  Some villagers were squawking about people speeding through 'their' village.  As a result the police set up a speed camera and 50% of the people they caught were locals.

This kind of hypocrisy is nothing less than I would expect from people in general and fully justifies my extreme dislike for other human beings that I don't know personally.

I have severe doubts as to the real motives behind this kind of busy-bodying and think that it is probably more to do with bolstering egos than a genuine concern for road safety.

Giving peasants a clip board and a speed detector isn't going to win any respect from motorists.

A number of interesting points raised in the typically emotive subject of speed control.

Firstly, what hypocrisy? Unless you can establish that the people speeding through the village were the ones actually complaining....  :?

Secondly (and as a reality check) at the end of the day, as has been said, the easiest way of avoiding a fine or a penelty or an unpleasant experience is to keep to below the speed limit.

Sorry if folk find this harsh or judgemental, but it's the simple fact of the matter. A sign says 30 - that means beyond that sign that is the maximum speed limit, whether the driver is slowing down or not. The driver is more than entitled to do 30 before the sign - the choice to do otherwise is the drivers and the drivers alone (a kinda case of 'don't blame the dog - you trod in it'    ).

The only issue I have with cameras is that they're unforgiving - a simple error in driving will get you a ticket, but the line has to be drawn somewhere. And if you're knowingly doing more than the posted limit, then you ain't gonna get a lot of sympathy.

Of course, people could be arguing against folk just wantin' to make their environment a better place to live.........

Cheers

Yes, that is what I was establishing.

There's justice for you!

I presumed that was the whole reason for the news item - the hypocrisy of the whole thing.  They didn't give specific details, but in that case I was quite prepared to believe what I read.

It would be interesting to find out how many of these preachers are without sin, so to speak.  Past observation of these types of people leaves me with with very little respect for them.
