Scammer baiting
« on: November 08, 2004, 14:25:30 »
Some time ago, I was asking around for an 88" chassis.  Out of the blue last night I got this email:

Quote
Hello,
I saw your e-mail address on the website that you need A 88" Chassis.it is in good condition and the price is  Ã‚£2,000 plus  shipper O.B.O.Therefore I will be expecting your respond without much delay  if interested.ok..
Mr Stewart..

It's scammer written all over it.  This was my reply:

Quote
Hi

For £2,000 I would expext a VERY good 88" chassis.

Regards

Pete

Sure enough, Mr Stewart wrote back:

Quote
Hello Back,
Thanks for the instant reply.Meanwhile i need to sell this my 88"chassis out very fast because i am in need of money to pay for my wife's surgery operation. So I will like you to send me your full name and address so that I can forward it straight to the shipping company for the fast delivery without much buerocrazy and i am receiving the payment via western union transfer.Hoping to mread from you back unfaillingly today..
Regards,
Mr Stewart..

Time to get baiting, and see just how much research gets done by these scammers:

Quote
Hi

Do you have any details of your 88" chassis?  Does it have the 2CV engine and gearbox, this is exactly what I'm looking for.

Regards

Pete

Quite a rare chassis I would imagine.  But, Mr Stewart has exactly what I need:

Quote
Hello Pete,
It is in excellent condition,It has 2CV engine with gear box.Send me your full name and address so that the transaction can be expedite.Meanwhile an agreement has been signed with the shipping company and you will need to sign as well when they gets to you because they are coming along with all the docements and i will like you to help me entertain them when they arrive and if all the required information requested by me is been given to me,they will branch at your vicinity on friday 12th November 2004.So you will need to reticulate the fund into two then you send half of the money to this doctor's information below then you get back to me with the test question and answer subsuming the MTNC control number:
 Name..... Abbey John Paul
address....200 ylazkaya street,
           krasnodar,
           Russia..

so that my wife's surgery operation can commence then you give the shipping company the remaining balance when they arrive.try and make this very fast so as to make trhe transaction expedite.looking forward to read from you back unfaillingly today

Now, do I continue this baiting, or leave it be?  Hm, decisions decisions.

I think my address might suddenly become:

I'm in one of those moods today, so I replied:

Quote
Hi Mr Stewart

I'm having difficulties.  I have been told that English Trading Standards require a payment of £15 (UK Pounds) before any international transaction can take place.  I have the £2000 asking price, but no more to pay English Trading Standards.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Regards

Mr Pete

Take a look at http://www.419eater.com/ for some fantastic anti-scamming activity.  Start at the Trophy Room, and then read the forums to find out how they did it.

The amount of imagination and creativity the anti-scammers have is awesome.  Some of the photos they get have me in tears.
