Huh? Now this you dont expect.
« on: February 20, 2007, 09:24:13 »
A few weeks back I posted about a close friend who was admitted to hospital with an aggressive brain cancer and a very slim chance of survival.

She came through the surgery but suffered a stroke on the operationg tabe, because of the type pf tumor involved they have to take a lot of the surrounding tissue and this is always a risk.

Only she was told yesterday that the cancer was NOT malignant and although it had to be removed the surgury they performed was unnecesarilly risky and invasive for the tkind of tumor and it may have been treatable without surgury. They have since pulled all of her meds bar the pain killers and steroids. Cancelled her Chemo and they sent her home yesterday along with the rider she can go back to work today if she wants. This to me sounds like they already know the outcome.

And this is a well known private healthcare company!

The last three or four weeks have been utter hell for her and now she has found out it was all unneeded, she was actually ready to deal with being told she was going to die.

Words really fail me at this point.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

Yes, I think words would fail me too.  I hope she is going to demand at least an explanation from them.

On a more positive note, your friend isn't going anywhere, so at least you've got something to be relieved about, despite all the incompetence.

Well the last consulatant apointment seemed to go along the lines of

You're ok now, please dont sue us...

The thought on my mind and Her mind is that they admitted it was a medical mishap. And when they started treatment they said that her chances wernt good if it wasnt caught and treated fast.

And a mix up, means somebodies want caught and treated fast....

Anyway, more or lesss a happy ending. And thats what we like round here :)

I wonder how often they make mistakes like that and only escape being sued due to the good nature of the victim.

My girlfriend is a nurse and she says that mistakes and general neglect/incompetence is far more prevalent than an 'outsider' might imagine.  Some hospitals are a lot worse than others it seems.

It's easy to sit here and moralize, pretending to be all good and righteous, but if I was your friend I think I might consider suing them.  Everyone else seems to be doing it given half the chance, and she's got good reason to do so.

She fully intends to. Shes a Paralegal so the apointment with the consultant last night was attended with one of the firms partners present.
