Be b***dy careful, if it's galvanised steel then when you weld it with an electric arc the Zinc breakes down to form Phosgene IIRC, I know it's nasty.

Yes, Be very careful, Wear a mask over your mouth and and nose and make sure that anyone that comes into the same area wears one too as the stuff will be floating around in the air like snow, pretty to look at but thats it.

Use a grinder and grind galvanisation off metal in the areas you intend to weld. As this will reduce the problem

Cheers Guys

Had plenty of practive working with galv when I worked in a fabrication shop.  It can be nasty stuff if not treated with care.  We where issued with, not only masks and extraction systems but also milk to drink. ( I believe this helps when working a lot with galv)  :?

We always grind off galv in the area we weld.  You should never attempt to weld directly onto galv!

Once again thanks for the warnings - Hopefully others we heed this thread

Phosgene, AKA Mustard gas, hence the milk.  Milk lines your stomach and if IIRC slightly alkaline too.

Good grief!  I always knew Mud Club membership was useful, but I never thought the information I'd get here could actually SAVE LIVES!    Mustard Gas!  Yikes!
