fog lamp requirements
« on: February 23, 2007, 15:40:41 »
hi, just a quick question i thought i would ask while i'm getting the series 3 ready for its next MOT.

at the moment, the rear fog lamp is not wired up. i am wondering if i need to wire it up for it to pass the MOT. i.e. is a rear fog lamp a legal requirement. its a 1984 series 3 if that makes a difference?

the lamp was not working for the last MOT, but i'm unsure if they just forgot to test it or something lol

thanks, matt

think it's a legal requirement for all vehicles. My friend is having to fit them to his 1976 S2

If its fitted to the vehicle then it has to work. If your Landy DIDNT come with rear fog when new then just remove it for the MOT.

Yes you will have to get it working, either centre or offside mounted, from vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1980

my 1974 series 3 didnt have one fitted, so the tester said it doesnt need one but if it is fitted it has to work.

Yes true, if it is in and not working in a vehicle prior to the above date, you can remove it and the switch

You have a choice of what you can do

As above, post 1st April 1980 it must have one and must work.
Cheers

Mine (1971) went through last month with none on the back, two unwired spots on the front and two unwired spots on the back (reversing lights?). Only comment I got was "you need a new cork seal on the petrol cap mate". Was I very lucky, or is it just rear fogs then?!  :?

Just rear fog lamps.  Front ones aren't required for testing, same goes for reversing lamps.  You only need a pair of headlights and sidelights for the front.  extra driving/fog lamp requirements would depend on what they are actully classed as (which is often identifiable by the E marking if marked), though not checked by the MOT they should still meet standards but that'd be checked by a traffic cop if they still exist.

I guess you could get round having technicly ilegal lights by stating they are not for road use like white rear worklamp or spot lamps.  You'd likely only get done for them if you drove past a copper with them all on.  Wouldn't have thought any copper would be too bothered by the site of a landy fitted with football stadium lights being used on the road turning them off in favour of dipped beams at the site of an oncomming vehicle.
