interior light flashing!!! and speedo wrong
« on: February 24, 2007, 19:13:53 »
Just picked up the range rover and its great other than a few niggles.

its a '83 'A' Reg

1. The interior light keeps flashing randomly sometimes fast, slow, long or short any ideas???

2.  The car was originally a V8 Auto and is now a 2.8TD manual and the speedo is still the auto one will this make any difference as the speeds are way out... was doing about 58mph according to my dials but was actually doing 80mph   :o

3.  Just parked it up and there was oil leaking out of the passenger side chassis leg  :o  :o    there is a little bit coming from the rear diff so a new seal is prob in order on there but why is it coming out of the chassis leg??? checked all engine etc and its bone dry...

other than that and the spot lights aint even wired up im quite pleased with it for just £1k

sounds like its working as it should - ie. its a landrover, and will never work properly!

1. smash interior light with big hammer

2. ignore dials

3. when it stops leaking, worry!

OOOOOR!

1. its probably some dicky wiring somewhere.. use a multimeter on it and see if its constantly live. if so then go further down the chain and to the same again, its probably just a connection thats touching something somewhere. fix that and it will probably stop!

2. dunno what you could do about it really, other than change the dial or possibly theres a modification for them to correct it?

3. god knows, is it coming out of the chassis or running down it? if its coming OUT of it then it might be the rare model that comes with "blood".

alternatively, it could be a breather thats fed into the chassis rail which happens to be leaking oil out, maybe?

the flashing interior light wil be a loose ground wire or one of the door pins broken so it keeps making contact to ground.

The speedo you can get re geared but i found it easyer to get a speedo out of a diesel rangy when mine was converted the speedo was miles out and i found this out when the speeding fine came through the door

Leeking rear diff oil could run alone the chassic and drip out at the lowers point or could be a breather if show check the diff levels and see if they have water in them.
Hope that helps

LR speedos usually read fas tby up to 10%.  I'm not quite sure what combination of componenets would result in such a large discrepancy.  The speedo drive is on the rear output from the transfer box so engine/gearing should make no difference.

managed to fix the interior light...

there is 2 little switches under the indicator stalk i just played around with them and it stays off now :)

as for the breather this could be the prob as the breather pipe from the front axle is loose and not attached anywhere and the end has melted and blocked ...

where is it supposed to go so i can fix it and put it in the right place in the morn.

Get your self a breather extension set if your going off road and extend them up as high as possible. If you have a snorkel, top of the snorkel is favourite, otherwise, somewhere high at the back of the engine bay.

Check out Wizardbilt on ebay for a nice breather kit. Others are available.

Aslo how can i sort the usual land rover lack of steering while on motorway.

There is this vast area where the steering wheel doesnt seem connected to the wheels  :D  :D

How i have missed this amazing drive.
