I've just bought a chainsaw from ebay in the states. Does any one know about import duty etc. I was going to ask the guy to send it as second hand machine parts because I think i read somewhere that you dont pay duty on second hand stuff only new. I know I would still have to pay the VAT though.
Any thoughts.

You take your chances really. You may be liable for duty & vat but plenty of people seem to manage to avoid it. If you search around the Customs & Excise site you'll find the exact details of what duty is payable on which items.

Gifts or sample goods get through without duty. But supposedly they're quite good at working out who's having 'em on.

I think you have to add on about 22% to cover import taxes, duties etc....but don't quote me on that one.

You might be able to recover the US purchase tax, not sure though.
Avoid using Uselss parcels service, they add on their own 'phone number to cover the extra paperwork, then loose your stuff anyway
