300 Tdi conversion into a 110 TD
« on: February 26, 2007, 17:45:30 »
well after 2 months of driving with a turbo D the time has come to replace the old Td with a TDI.

After looking for a good 200 i had to go for a 300 and i now want to know if anyone has fitted a disco 300 into a turbo D and what are the main problems.

I have fitted a 300 into a RRC so not too fused about the hours of effort but i want to get as many bits as i can at sodbury so a list would be a great help.

i got the rad intercooler and all the pipes "fuel and water"

what else do you think i will kneed? :?

Are you doing an 'as factory' conversion???
So amoung other things fitting a Defender spec r380....

Or doing a 'make it fit' conversion??

What you need depends on the route you want to take.  Personnally I'd do an 'as factory' conversion which means every part is avaliable off the shelf!!!

You could do a semi 'factory' install though

LR built a couple of auto 300tdi's for military evaluation... and then they built the auto NAS and UK V8's.
With the correct use of parts it can be done.....

Just make sure you can clear the steering box......

Means you could push your winch a lot further back too!!

as per factory no i want to keep the lt77 as it is smooth and quiet.

when i fitted a 300 to my rrc i used the disco 200 tdi bellhousing as this is a straight fit. and i will look to do the same if i have room.

M&D do a nice set of engine mounts and i still have the template from the rrc so that should help. its just i have limited defender parts and sodbury is comming up so dont want to miss anything :)

To use the LT77 isn't that hard... all you need to do is swap the 300Tdi rear cover for the one off your Td.  Doing this means that the engine will bolt straight onto the gear box - so all the transmission, flooring, propshafts etc etc stay the same.

All you need to do is weld on new engine mounts....
The only problem this causes is the fact the engine will be about 2" closer to the bulkhead than a 'factory' 300Tdi.

So every coolant pipe, intercooler pipework and the oil cooler pipes will need to be modified unless you try and move the radiator and intercooler back - but this isn't without problems either (i.e. steering box).

The exhaust will also have to be modified... and the air filter assembly might be a bit of a tight fit.

Have a read here: http://www.nicksjungle.co.uk/300conversion/300tdi.html  - this guide covers most of the points.

Get as many bits of pipe as you can lay your hands on (if they're cheap) to make the connections between the snorkel (if fitted) the air box, the turbo to the intercooler and the intercooler to the inlet manifold. Also probably need to make the water pipe fit too. This was the hardest part and most time consuming part, especially the metal pipe to join plastic pipes together. (although I was fitting a 200tdi, maybe a 300 is different?)

I'm doing that on my project 90 The simpleest solution i found was to use the old 2.5td mounts on the 300tdi engine If you want any further info PM me and I'll send you my mobile and talk you through it
