I'm guessing by north west that you are lake district ish?

If you wanted to have a go yourself I would suggest an engine hoist and big trolley jack.  Take the tranfer box off first as it needs to be split anyway then drop the box on it's own.  I use the engine hoist in through the driver's door and through the centre console.  The trick is to get the box balanced on a slink and use the trolley jack to steady it/hold it in position. I think I managed the box on  my own

But I did have a mate help me drop the engine :wink:

Seriously though, if you don't fancy it I don't blame you.  It's all very well saying how satisfying it is to DIY but it's not always so much fun and the gearbox is a bit of a salad dodger.

Tim offered to fix the prop on the LSE today, he is a much more athletic build :wink:  and even on high profile we had to drive it up a small ramp before he could get underneath.  Don't know quite why but there seems to be less room under an auto.

No idea! lol But the replacement box arrived today, dont know if its the same one or not, it was advertised as a zf 4 spd from a rangie classic, but doesnt have the filler and dipstick pipe that comes up to the engine, but then this could have just been taken off!

Anyone want to fit it in return for the pc i have listed on the for sale board?

The dipstick fits to a union on the front of the sump.  If I were you I'd be fitting a servie kit to it whilst it's off the car.

whats one of them and how easy is it?

on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being for someone who just about knows the engine is at the front of the car, and 10 being the best mechanic i am a 2, so it needs to be simple lol

With the box sat in front of yoiu, about as easy as it gets provided you don't have 10 thumbs too.

6 bolts hold on the sump, remove carefully as they go into Ali

2 small bolts hold the filter (like a cigarette case) onto the bottom of the valve block.

Fit the new filter with the O ring supplied.

Fi the new sump gasket, mine was a tiny bit small and kpet faling off, stretch it gently in a bowl of hot water before you start.

Refit the sump onto the new gasket, ge all 6 bolts started before tightening any and try to use the witness line from the old gasket to get it right.

DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN, better a bit loose and some threadlock than strip the threads in the 'box.

With it in front of you, less than an hour with copious stops for tea :D

Jack the car up a bit so you have got room to move around.

Remove front and rear propshafts, exhaust and chassis crossmember.

Disconnect handbrake cable/mech.

I might sugest splitting the transfer box off first, so undo the chassis/gearbox mount on the transfer box, undo the transfer box to gearbox bolts and lift the transfer box out with a trolley jack.

Disconnect things like the kickdown cable, selector and oil cooler pipes from the auto box

remove the bellhousing cover and disconnect the torque converter from the engine drive plate

8 bolts hold the 2 parts together, support the gearbox on the trolley jack or with a hoist in through the cab and remove the 8 bolts plus the final gearbox mount and lower the gearbox out.

There's probably a few things that I've forgotten but that's the gist of it.  You really ought to read the manual first.

Maybe not the best job to learn the art of DIY on.  If I told you that the easiest way was to lift off the body you'd have a good idea :wink:  assuming you have a fork lift truck.

nah, cos the series is worth a little more than the £200! lol, i do have a backup, as i am trying to sell me pc as well, but a mate of mine in wales says if i can get the motor to him next weekend he will do the gearbox change in return for the pc.

changed mine last year, so here goes.
If you have a 2" lift you can change the gear box without jacking the car,thats how i done mine. disconnect battery,disconnect prop shafts, release handbrake cable and speedo cable( small clip held by one bolt) disconnect kickdown cable,remove gearbox crossmember,remove half moon cover in front of flywheel remove toque converter bolts (4 off) disconnect gear shifter remove bellhousing bolts (need to tilt box to get to top one's) disconnect inhibitor switch,disconnect oil cooler pipes, before removing last two bellhousing bolts (at 3 and 9 oclock) support gearbox and transfer box with large trolley jack and the gearbox comes out. becareful it's b----y heavy make sure torque converter stays in place when gearbox is pulled backwards or you'll be drowned in oil, then have a rest, some tea and some oxygen. putting it back is the reverse if the gearbox needs the torgue converter fitting on the new box make sure you stand the gearbox vertical and place the torgue converter in and lower it turn it slowly clockwise and it will drop down it needs to drop twice or you could break the pump in the gearbox. top up and check the oil  and thats all there is too it said brucey
A handy tip is to buy some red or green electrical tape and when you undo something put some tape around the bolt or union  and only when it has been retightened removethat bit of tape.
