been out in the disco all day, and ive got a problem,what i can make out its whining like an old bus, it sounds like a tyre whine/rub and only does it on certain types of road at a certain speed,it cant be the diffs as there really quiet and have been since i got it a couple of weeks ago,
as anyone got any ideas?

If it only does it on certain stretches of road, then it probably is the tyres.
 There is a newly surfaced road near me, where my tyres howl like a she wolf in heat. Only happens o that road, since resurfacing, it's an experimental surface, the noise is supposed to make you slow down.

It even does it on the motorway , well i get my new tyres next week and we shall see,been out in it today and the g/box does give a little whine now and then, so it deff the tyres , well im hoping it is,

tried another set of tyres on it this weekend, but its still making the same noise, its deff not a gearbox whine but i can be wrong, can props make a noise at all , cos its nice and quiet upto about 40mph

Not props but diffs can.  So couold a loose wheel bearing but I'd expect you to hear that on corners too.

i free wheeled down a long hill today out of gear and it sounds like the rear diff.is it easier to change the complete axle or just the diff,

is there anywhere on the net i can get exploded views of difs/axles etc

If it's the diff, change the diff, not axle, or even cheaper, (not easier though) change the bearings in the diff.....
gone from 200tdi.... to 300tdi... still with loads done to it, in fact, even more than the last truck...LOL!!!

do i just remove the half shafts (both) remove he 10 nuts and remove the diff, is  it as easy as that?

Drain the oil, remove the prop, pull the halfshafts out, 10 nuts and bingo, the diffs out......
gone from 200tdi.... to 300tdi... still with loads done to it, in fact, even more than the last truck...LOL!!!

i suppose its worth  a go, ill see the condition of the wheel bearing first then if i take the shafts out first,

where can i get another difF?

i havent got a clue , suppose you cant tell till its removed, i agve it a good run this aft, it actually got warmed up, the noise im explaining is like a droning noise,if anyone else has had the same

Dronong could be a wheel bearing too, or a bearing in the diff.

If yours is a 300 TDi then it'l probably be 24 spline.

24 splines are dear matey.  One of the local guys got one from HERE but you might try 4x41 (01924 849000) first as they sometimes have 2nd hand ones in and they are local........  I was certain my rear diff was noisy but it turned out to be the wheel bearings....

well mm-4x4, do one for £165 ive just been looking, doesnt say if its a refurb or not,

i suppose i could do the bearings first,(cheaper option) then see what happens , just the process of elimination i suppose.

Yep . . . . quick turn-round, back on the road in no time . . . . off with the prop, out with the ring of bolts and stuff the new diff in . . . . sorted . . . . came with instructions and new gaskets etc . . . . a straight forward replacement job.

I also know another guy local to us who got one from there and the guy at Crown delivered it .and picked up the old one at the same time for refurb . . . on a Friday evening as well . . . . can't fault that for service  :wink:

Tru RRB but, with ebay there is that risk of " i didnt know it whined" "wasnt mine, was selling it for a friend" "was quiet when i took it off !"

thanks for all your advice on this one

well i got a second hand diff. with guarantee got it fitted, and wow what a quieter car, the droning has gone, but bearings are humming slightly,so gonna get some prices on them and the discs too,

wheres best place to get bearings and discs from?
