Suzuki SJ or something...er...HELP!
« on: March 08, 2007, 22:34:50 »
Alright there Suzuki owners!

Now…I’m seriously considering getting an SJ for me forth coming b-day, and I usually a Landy fan but would like a cheap and small thing to thrash around the Pay ‘n’ Play sites (not to be put on the road), as the land rovers seem a lot of money to buy in the first place and then to restore and what have you…and then to pay to have on the road etc…so will wait for that when I has got me money up a bit!

So then could anyone tell me a bit more about SJ’s what other models in this range is there…something like a 143 or something I don’t know, lol! Anything to look out for when buying one and what kinda prices these owners should be charging?  :?

I just don’t like the vitara’s!

Much appreciated for any help…Thanks  :!:

hi steven
ok ere goes m8
sj varients are
sj410 with a 1ltr engine some had 4 and some had 5 speed boxes these have the narrower axles
then came the sj413 with the 1300 engine only 5 speed box and same narrow axles
then the sj413 samurai came in 1988 again 1300 engine but had wider axles
all come as either softtop or hard top
all of them rot usuall behind the front seats and in the foot wells and the rear floor pan.
if you can find a good 1300 the engines are good 1ltr are under powered for ofroading
if you get a modded one check make sure its done well as ur life is on the line,
you can get them form pennies to thousands

if you do want a cheap zuki offroader the vit (i no u dont like them) is gettin better for value for money than the sj

Just to say that when I started looking for a Zuki I had a SJ in mind but quickly realised that good ones, standard or modded now fetch premium prices.  When I worked out what I wanted it for, RTV trialling in my case, and the likely mods I would need, the Vit made a lot of sense, got a good'un for £300 in the end.  Good hunting.

I agree with most of Simons comments, but i wouldnt discount the 1 litre it is pretty unburstable and with a bit of tweeking (SU) it will still do the biz off road........says the man who will be fitting a 1600 next week (because there no substitute for cubic inches)
As Simon says rot is the big enemy if you can find one that has has had the arches welded and the floor behind the seats patched (i could show you twenty pics of different zooks and they all have that problem) all the better. Watch out for dodgy looking "improvements" especially with stuff like SPOA suspension conversions and supposed roll cages (bent scaffold tubes held together with snot welds does not rate highly on my "safe" list).

Possible sources to buy include the wanted/forsale sections of Mud club,Difflock.com and Shropshire Suzuki.
Ebay (prices can be a little steep but you do get bargains),Adtrader (my new hunting ground) and Autotrader are also a good start.

As for prices, i have seen a half decent 410 go for £50....i was 5 mins too late, but you can also pay a lot of money for one that has been built for off road.Above all look at a few before you buy, unless its a real steal, and you can always ask on here if you need advice.

sj413. less pretty, so you dont mind so much when you trash the bodywork. easy to work on, simple mechanics etc.

My only advice is....they seem cheap on the surface, but parts arent cheap! bits are getting hard to come by these days, and spares like bearings etc are top dollar!
I can tell you, Ive owned a zook for 5 1/2 years now, its been modded on zook axles, then I wanted to go wider so I blagged a pair of cheap Landrover 90 axles and fitted them. For the cost of a pair of suzuki wheel bearings, you can refurb all the wheel bearings and swivel bearings/bushes on a Landy axle. Parts are soooo cheap for Landies
Go on....cut me in half........it says SUZUKI all the way thru the middle!!
