Really Hard to start.
« on: November 16, 2004, 21:37:34 »
I have been having problems for a while now with having to to crank my V8 for ages to get it to catch.  The ammount that you have to crank it depends on how long you leave it i.e:
5 Mins - Starts Pretty Good
20 Mins to 2 Hrs - A real Git to start
Over Night - Okish but not what i would call normal

I have replaced the coil and the rotor arm with LR (Lucas) and the distributor cap and leads are also new.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as i currently have a very good battery and would like to keep it that way!

Fuel heating up in the engine bay, check for heat shielding around the fuel supply.

Poor compression, more a problem on Diesels but worth checking, hot, warm and cold!

Wrong plugs.

Try leaving the bonnet open when it's been run, see if that makes a difference?  (I'm assuming you mean it won't fire, rather than won't turn over)

It does sound like fuel evaporation, old vw's used to be a swine for it. Is it on carbs or efi?
Cheers, Karl..

Its on EFI.  What are the possible remedies for fuel evaporation?

I had a thought last night, when i installed the engine i didnt connect the wire from the fuel relay to the pump as it ram OK without it and the pump ran just fine......... what is this relay for?

Ahha!!  I think i may have sussed the problem late last night.  My disco was originally a carbed V8 but then i put the 3.9 efi in, when i installed it i left the wiring for the fuel pump alone, as i assumed that it would run full time, but i was wrong.... it only runs when the engine does
The efi fuel system needs to be primed before starting so there is fuel behind the injectors!!  To cut a long story short i have just taken the pump feed via a switch now so i can decide when the pump runs!

Thanks for the advice.
