Went to take a look under the bonnet today and discovered that the transmission oil access tube had SNAPPED OFF!   :shock:   What the...?
It was only being held in place at all by the dipstick.  It appears to have snapped about 40 cm in, about where the tube comes into contact with the firewall.

Ever seen this?  I'm sure it can be fixed, but I'm more interested in knowing WHY it happened.  No obvious corrosion on the tube.  Gnomes maybe?

Sounds like you've answered your own question there, I imagine the tube has been vibrating against the firewall, and split. You should be able to replace the tube at a guess, and there may be a clamp somewhere to keep the tube away from chafing

This is not from knowing how the disco autos are, just general observations, please anyone who knows these things please chip in

Well, I've just been over at my local garage, and they pulled the filler tube off the V8 Disco they've got sitting around, but it's different piece.  So I stopped off on the way home for some hose and a few ring clamps, and we'll see what we see tomorrow.

I'm sure it won't be much to look at, but having the new part installed will cost me the equivalent of 220 British Pounds. :(   So DIY it is!  I'd just plug it what's left of the tube, but then I'd have no real way to keep an eye on the oil level, and it would be a bit of a pain to top off if need be.

I'll post some pics when I finish.
