ABS How much!
« on: March 16, 2007, 22:32:30 »
Ola,
A friend has just brought a m plate disco and phoned to say that the ABS modulator has gone.He said it means something keeps going under the bonnet when switched off.Dont have these worries on series!
He's  been told 600 quid to replace it or 500 quid to bypass it.Does that sound right or any cheaper options.
Thanks in advance.

600 quid to replace it? possible if a garage does the work... 500 quid to bypass? load of toss. if it costs 600 to replace theres no way it costs 500 to bypass it!

saying that i have NO IDEA if those figures are even realistic, but in all fairness i doubt it!

either way - where abouts in swad are you from? i've probably flashed our lights at you :P

Ola,
That's why he phoned as he wasn't sure.I thought it was a bit strange but knew somebody on here will know!I've given him a couple of numbers locally who are landrover specialists (non landrover garage on the edge of London gave him quote!)as he's up this way soon.
I'm near Pingles school, but you  won't have seen me in Landy as it "work in progress".Should be up for 1st attempt at mot soon though!
Whers you?

yeah sounds like a load of bull to me! i mean, a garage will always charge more, but the £500 to bypass part sounds particularly money making... whats it gonna cost them? a couple of hours (if that) and a bit of wire maybe? dunno... i dont know how it works!

what is it you've got/will have? from the first post i gather its a series? :) we're in overseal, down the a444!

I did suggest he got a haynes manual and found one from a breaker or off here but hes not that technically minded

AAh I drive through there every day.
I got a series 3 SWB with a Perkins Diesel.Just rewired the internal electrics, just got the rear tail lights to make glow. Then all of those other little jobs like an exhaust bracket, windscreen washers-Grrr they are my personal favorite  .Then tidy up the body work.Fixed the handbrake by hitting it with a rubber mallet.
Then its a trip to the MOT station to find out what ive missed.Oh and it needs new tyres.
Are you Discovery or Defender/Series

Hello mate me not far from you and karlo must be just around the corner from you as he lives by the school as well. Quick word of advise dont go to all drive in woodville with it. Give mud club matty a shout his dad owns midland 4x4 on the A444 by toons. He wont "do you" so to speak.

nah, its had them taken off more than a few times, so shes given up now! nevermind the other cars she's had.... a444 is a [throw it] take!

alldrive are "ok", but being a small place they're usually a bit more expensive particularly on odd bits (which is understandable first hand from our own experience), and you do have to catch tony in the right mood... hes sometimes quite short with people :? his sons usually ok though

So what does this involve Mike, it sounds bit dodgy to me :?

For that sort of cash I'd be fitting a non-ABS system, is this what you do?  The ABS in Discos is very different to the RRC isn't it.

I'm told main stealer prices for a new master ABS unit are about a grand on a RRC:shock: and there will undoubtedly be more work involved in removing the RRC ABS

Anyway, I'm still learning my way into ABS, though I had a success today.  I hadn't been able to get into the blink codes on this car I'm doing up.  Finally found today that some claud had snipped the warning light wire and scotchlocked it into the alternator warning instead, just to fool the MOT man.  Never mind that the brakes don't work

remove the ABS modulator & horse in the skip,i have the diagram for what pipe goes where at work, you need to make 1 new pipe from the master to where the abs mod was & you can reuse the existing pipes with a bit of jiggery, basically run the pipes from the master to where the mod was & install T Pieces to split it so you get the 4 lines,

Ah, cool.

I realised when I was halfway through typing that the Disco system has a conventional master cylinder and vac servo.  The RRC doesn't

I don;'t know which is better to drive but I'd imagine cost had a lot to do with the Disco system.
