If it had anything to do with the environment they'd base your road tax on your emissions.

But that'd be too simple & not pandering to the Guardian readers enough.

It's all a smokescreen to generate money. How does taxing us more stop us polluting - IT DOES NOT.

Just put the tax on fuel - that way, oddly, people that do 17mpg pay MORE than people who do 60mpg .... simple, and the best thing is the means to do it already exists

Oh and get this .. it works in two ways, it also can be used to "pay as you go" ... the more fuel you buy, the further you can drive on UK roads. Odd but true

Sadly I think the main reason they will perpetually shy away from increasing fuel duty is that it's already perceived as being disproportionate anyhow, hence the "fuel protests", and whilst this government might have gone to the precaution of making it illegal to repeat them I think that even they would balk at the idea of sending tanks over the top of people blocking a refinery ,,

And, so they raise road tax, and why not?  we can hardly picket the post offices, since, frankly, finding one that's still open is a fairly substantial challenge

The problem is we have people who don't pay road tax now so they certainly won't if the prices get hiked up.They have road accidents and have no insurance/tax/mot so insurnace prices go up to cover that as well. I still say put it on fuel prices then if you use the fuel you pay the price and eveyone has to pay tax.

putting it on the fuel has to be best way forward as has been said the more that you use the more you pay.

Now why could the government not see this logic we wonder?

could it be that he needs a 'guaranteed' revenue hike without putting the price up to other motorists at the same time?

I just hope that they dont put the tax up on my 4x4 - mine is not one the chelsea tractor brigade and shouldnt be tarred with the same brush.

But if you put it on fuel tax then people who live in rural areas are penalised.

Let's see ...

Put it on fuel tax: rural areas are punished because they drive more so use more fuel.

Put it on road tax: everyone with a higher band is punished despite whether they have converted to a greener fuel (LPG).

Put it on emissions: people who have converted to greener fuel are rewarded but you're not pandering to the anti-4x4 brigade who don't see a Mondeo 2.0 as worse than a Disco running LPG.

Basically it comes down to looking for votes rather than actually trying to come up with a sensible transport policy for the whole country.

To be blunt, vehicle types and green fuels is irrelevant. All vehicles have an environmental cost. A v8 on LPG still produces oodles of CO2 and emissions (your still incineratin' a gallon of dead dinosaurs every 18 miles) - but that isn't the point.

My car might not be the most CO2 friendly in the world, but I put out less emissions in a year than some folk pour out a month simply because I'm a little cautious about how often I use my car. My 10,000 miles a year is significantly less poluting than some rep clocking up 30 - 50k miles a year. Where is my incentive?

The people up the top need to remember the first question of engineering - what problem are we trying to solve? Understand the question and the solution virtually writes itself. But in this case, the solution requires a bit of investment from them.

I feel better now!

I think you'll find it is proposed it will be based on emissions, so therefore it will only effect post 2001 cars as those registered before this don't have official emmisions data.

knock tax off everything
knock off all income tax

PUT VAT UP TO 40%!

That way the skiving thieveing tax dodging, dole whallas, and similar, will have have to smarten up, cos to buy owt will be considerably more expensive, and the earners among us will be in exactly the same position as we are now!!

I once suggested that rather than giving job seekers allowance as cash you replace it with a card scheme which could be used to pay for things provided they were not subject to VAT (this only works at food stores), which means that Alcohol, Cakesl, Cigarettes etc would be unavailable, but theoretically things like meat, veg and bread would be ...

note remotely practical, but an entertaining mental exercise.

All it will mean for me is that I sell the Micra.  I can't justify running an samll environmentally 'better' car that can't carry my dogs, pull my caravan or, quite frankly, survive the state of some tarmac roads in this authority.

So I'll be using the Range Rover more, but hell if I'm paying that much for road tax, I'll be getting my money's worth.

Don't worry too much though, 4x4 made up less than half of the cars penalised by the introduction of band G on road tax.  All those politicialns won't be able to buy nice Merc convertibles for their wives/misstresses any more if they pay that much road tax.

Besides, everyone in the house of lords drives a Rolls don't they?

they wont put the fuel price up because of the implications.  tesco wont be able to sell there bread for 18p cuz it would cost more for the 11liter turboed 4mpg tuck to deliver it there for the whole cost of living would go up.  avg shopping bill of £100 pm would about around £150+ same goes for clothes etc.  free home delivery or home delivery for shopping would go up and buss prices would go up (dont let me get started on them) and my little old mum wont be able to afford to go anywhere with her grandkids cuz its to ****ing expencive.  so the only logical way to put the money is on car tax.   thats the way he looked at it.   still wanna kick the living **** out of the ****er as he drives off in his jag.....    which would look good awith me paj on top of it!!!

Must admit IF it does go up by that much I shall leave my 998cc nova i use for commuting at home and take my "gas guzzling" V9 disco to work instead, As i go along with the theory that if i am paying a premium for something, then i must use it as often as i wish/able to.

I also agree that it should be put on fuel and NOT tax == simple really, More ya use more ya pay, But it dont work that way in this land does it ??    Come the revolution !!

The funniest (and saddest) thing about it all is that if you believe, as I do(and many, many more), that CO2 is not responsible for global warming it's all a load of b*ll*cks anyway! The scary thing is that it's not just a UK phenomena, either. The whole world is falling into this trap so I can't even emigrate to get away from it.

They can't up the road tax to £400 for "4x4s" as mentioned by the media, even on new cars.  It's simply isn't feasible.  How do you define the 4x4 "Chelsea tractors"?  The reason why they haven't been singled out in the tax bracket is because there is no way to actually identify them easily.

now the thing that amuzes me is how we are all saying there should be more tax on fuel

if the "idiots" in parliment hadnt come up with £400 road tax / road pricing etc and just said were gonna put another 5p on fuel we'd be in uproar

however if they were to say were gonna scrap the road pricing idea / £400 road tax etc and just put 5p on a litre we'll all breath a sigh of relief

The bottom line with road tax is that we will all still go on paying it anyway. £400 per year is not going to stop anyone driving a big car. So the government are on to a winner whichever way you look at it.

They gain millions of Pounds every year.
They are seen 'doing something about pollution'   .
And the only people who will be upset are the anti's who will say that the government haven't gone far enough......

You mark my words... and we'll see

What about a mass drive of 4x4's into London 'to see the sights' of course. I can't advocate that anything is done along the lines of Critical Mass, coz that would be very naughty of me!
