Rag top roof help
« on: March 19, 2007, 22:18:30 »
Well I have now got my Vit and part of the deal was that it would be a rag top because a few years ago we had a Golf cab and she wanted the wind in the hair thing again. The car I have is a 2 piece top and my question is can you and how do you completely remove the roof. I have had a quick look in the spring weather but decided I was better off with the roof up and heater on. It appears that when the sections are folded back you need some sort of retaining straps and I don’t think I have any? I need to get this sorted because if on the first decent day it doesn’t work I guess it will be my fault.

If its a Grand Vit the 2 piece is similar to the Jimny AFAIK.  The straps are sewn to the inside of the Targa Top and loop over the fram then velcro to themselves.  Removing the targa completely requires un popping it from the front of the frame, folding it back on to the rear rood, then inscrewing the screws that hold it and its retaining bar in place.

the rear is just a case of unpoppering it from the frame and taking it off.

Dot know about a Vit 2 piece, i didnt think they made one. Correct me if im wrong.  :D

To remove (and this is the quickest way we have found to get the standard softop off)

Remove the back window.
Undo the poppers on the roll hoop first, then the straps that hold the sides in. Release the catches above the sun visor and flip it all back. undo the straps that go through the hoops at the hinges of the section that swings back.

Pull the sides out and undo the velcro that holds the sides to the freames, replace the frames in their clips and put the straps round the rear support before you collapseit, its just easier to do it at this point.

Pulle the bottom corners towards the back and the plastic 'toungues' will slide out, then undo the poppers under the top that secure it to the rear support. The whole thing should now lift off.

Pull the supports for the rear support towards the front of the car while moving the rear support up and down, they will pop out and you can clip them in to the clips on the support. Fold it down and loop the strap attached to the tailgate over the bar and pop it onto the central popper.

Fasten it all back down and you are done.

Putting it back on we found it easier to put the middle poppers on the roll hopp on first and do the ones on the rear support up before you lock it into place.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

It is not a Grand Vit its a 94 JX but it does have a 2 piece roof :? , in the better weather today I have had a look and it seems that the two sections just fold back. The targa looks like it needs some straps with poppers to hold it down when folded back, the rear just folds back and is a snug enough fit behind the pillars that hold the upper seat belt mounts. One bonus is that although the roof has seen better days so far has not let in a drop  Off topic but how the F*** do you remone the rear light lenses, no screws and difficult to get at from the back of the bumper.

from the back of the bumper. That said the bumper comes off easy enough. 8 screws, 4 top, 4 bottom then just slide it back and off the car.
