looking for a laptop.
needs to run memory map along with a few other bits of mapping software,would also prefer to be cheap IE sub £400,something reasonably new aswell.....

Mikee do a google for Lenovo..... we got two for the girls with bags etc. for under £700 and they are brilliant  :wink: Think we bought ours from Dabs but cant quite remember :?

I bought a NEW IBM Thinkpad last year from Staples.  Under £400 with wireless, cd/dvd burner, windows XP home and it has been perfect.  Not used memory map but do use Navigator software with USB GPS thingy. Has 3 hour battery life (usefull) Oh was also watcing Snatch while Jess was in advanced labour  :wink:
The thing I like best is the small fingertip joystick thing instead of the touchpad mouse

Same here gpt my daughter oen the other month, after being messed about with currys, sent it back

The dell was perfect under £400, nearly gave her my old p4 instead and kept the dell for myself :D

I just sent for my free "upgrade" copy of Vista......... not saying I am going to use it but getting it free I thought I may as well send for it....... all I had to do was email a company in Holland who then send me it out because I bought a Vista Capable laptop just before christmas :D

linky

this hp one at £340inc vat looks pretty good -
its got 512mb of memory (much better than having 256) a dvd writer and everything you should need built in.

Dont buy an ACER.. SWMBOs pc is acer - and in the last 3 weks the Monitor has gone bang, and now the PSU is going - cuts out after about 15mins.. also had loads of problems with it in the 3 years we have owned it - warranty isnt worth the paper its written on  :evil:

Acer stuff is generally some of the best stuff on the market, built to last and highly recommended.
Currys and pc world have some laptops in at the moment for under £300 delivered and that seems to be the best deal out there at the moment.

I have a mate whos Acer Desktop has been sent back after a short period as it was refusing to load.

But i have an Acer Laptop and it has been amazing, I run memory map off it without a problem. And i was advised by an imdependent shop who didn't even sell them to get one as they are considerd a top brand.
It is about a year old. And it runs better than my parents 2.8 Gig desktop they have.

Have a butchers at Tesco as they sell Acer laptops at a fair price too.

Johnty has an acer that he has never had any trouble with. I bought one in august last year and in december demanded my money back as it had spent more time at the repair shop than with me. Seems if you get a good one it will be really good but if you get a bad one you are stuffed :cry:

the current recommendation to properly run vista on a laptop is 2gb of ram....now you are into serious spec laptop!

Well I don't know who made that reccommendation Because I have a laptop with 1gb ram and it is badged as Vista Capable. Not that I will be running Vista, Well not till all the gliches, bugs and security flaws are sorted.

Here's another recommendation for Acer from me.

I've always been a Compaq and Toshiba user, but my current laptop is an Acer TravelMate 8215WLMi.  Absolutely stunning piece of kit, but it may be out of your price range a tad.

try running it, especially with office 2007..... slow isnt the word.

we had a customer who installed it on his laptop with 512 and simply got blue screen of death!!

Yes Vista is memory hungry, the dell I got for my daughter only had half a gig mem in.

Went out and fitted a 1 gig mem upgrade in it, half the price of what dell wanted, and a higher spec chip

Big difference, told her to let me know when she wants the other gig getting, and will give it another boost

Vista upgrades are all well, but there is still a lot of software incompatibilty problems, for example I have ntl/virgin internet and there own software is still not compat with vista

It does a check on your system before you upgrade, and will tell you what software/hardware is not compat with it, It looks good, but I think another 12 months and they may have it up to a usable level

Might well be worth checking with ms to see if there is an online check that can be done before you fork out for the upgrade, you might not want to if you have to change some hardware or bin some of the software you like/have to use

The upgrade I am getting is absolutely free cos of the laptop I bought...... costs me nothing, zero, zip........... dont even have to pay postage from Holland. If it's free I am gonna send for it......... not saying I am gonna use it though :lol:

I had a b***er of a job finding one old enough to have a serial port on it for some of my diagnostic tools.

Fortunatley the fix-it fairies came up trumps.

Thats the one, could save you a lot of hassle, Vista is very picky on what it will play with
