Im not 100% sure but i think it's vehicles registered after 2001 that will suffer.Someone will correct me if im wrong.

Probably correct, I think it will be limitied to Band G and possibly Band F, and it was only vehicles after 2001 that were put into Bands.
Any change to vehicle classes would require a complete change to the whole vehicle taxation structure, and there are too many car based 4x4's, such as Panda's and Subaru's to make a special class of 4x4.

And where do you draw the line of what is a '4x4'?  My friend's Audi TT is a 4 wheel drive - does that get lumped in with Land Rover/Jeep/Paj etc?  And for those of us old enough to remember the Sierra XR4x4 - where would that fit in?

It's not, has not, and will never be a "4x4 tax", such a tax would be unworkable in a legal sense as there is only an arbitary (and undefinable) distinction between what is a 4x4 and what isn't.

A series 3 is a 2wd for the best part of the time, and most Audis aren't.

hell, if it comes to that I'd just add another axle, then it's a 6x4 :D

Hence the regulations is that all vehicles registered after march 2001 are placed into taxation bands dependent upon the amount of carbon dioxide produced per kilometer, a reasonably naive way of looking at the problem, but that's another matter.

the highest tax band, band "G" only applies to "gas guzzlers" (anyone else hate the americanisation in that phrase?) and only those registered after march 2006.  The Range Rover falls into this category, but then so do most Porches, some MPVs etc etc...

So why call it a "4x4" tax ?  well, I would have thought the answer to that one was obvious, anyone with a people carrier thinks they're not going to get caught by it... untill ...  <ooops>

To be fair it's only the media thats called it a 4x4 tax, not the government and as Neil says there could well be a few surprised people around when they realise that their non 4x4 prestige car falls in to this category.

Old cars (reg before March 2001 ) have gone up by £5 ( so rate is now £115 for 1549cc and below, £180 above 1549cc)
 
Cars registered  after 2001 have gone up £10 for alternative fuels, £15 for  petrol and £10 for diesel. In each band

The £400 only applies to the new reg vehicles as mentioned earlier.

So-£5 extra on my Rangie -not a big deal but £15 on my 56 reg Renault 1.6 and £10 on wife's 53 reg 2.2 dti Frontera -hmmm makes sense-not!

The tax increase to £300 (£400 next year) is only for vehicles in group G. The group was put in place from March last year (the 26th, IIRC), and so only vehicles registered from that date should be affected.

From everything I've read, it would seem that a vehicle registered before that date would have been in band F, even if they now qualified for band G based on emissions. So does that mean there'll be a price premium on RR's registered before the group change happened? Maybe in 10 years when the rest of us can actually afford them :lol:

I understand that "normal" road tax - the pre2001 rates - has gone up by £15. I'm glad I got my backside in gear and went online yesterday morning to buy mine before he put the prices up!

BTW, my Octavia's in band F - the same band as a Freelander (and probably any other emissions based LR registered before March last year). I think it's only the 1.8 turbo's that are, but even so, it hits a lot more people than just us 4x4 drivers!

Her other half's new Focus, TBH the cleanest car in our family, £15 :shock:

So I'ma  bit dubious about casuing a fuss, it could have been a lot worse.  It only yake Gordon to work out that if he bings in a tax band for 3 litres and above, then hit that hard and we are stuffed.

At least the TDis will be safe, otherwise he will have to hit every white van in the country, every big German Diesel saloon, crikey, he'd get linched.

BTW, have you noticed how the Gov't is very good at leaking their intentions, it's never an official statement but a leak, so that it rides the back of public opinion.

We get to hear that the budget will hit just the gas-guzzling 4x4, so the antis think they have won.

When the truth comes out, everybody looses.

Anyone now if there is a car in production that falls into tax band A?
