I totally agree with what he is saying. Saying that, I've seen a lot of Pinzgaeurs (think that the right spelling) in British army use at the moment. They are quite good apparently

BTW, the yanks laugh so hard at Land Rover Defenders that they bought loads of them.

They survived in Northern Ireland for years.

And the reason they don'r fit 3.9s is that Petrol is a bl***y silly idea in a fighting vehicle.  The TDi Wolfs are quite quick though I'm told.

the thing is if you stick a driver / commander /and four squaddies in a lwb wolf
with all the kit and kevalar
it is to heavy to be a speed machine
we had stripped out SWB V8's in Ireland
only four of us to a vehicle and they were still slow
ok once they were moving though
its the armour that weighs things down
but better to have than not i always say
best thing was all the spares were same day delivery

no humvees are quick but
are arse to work on and too small inside
all engine and sharp corners
only good for four guys with no kit
they were designed for recce's only
get in and out as fast as possible
good on road pants off road
and use fuel like 4 mpg

The snatches weren't really designed for what they are being used for now in Iraq, they were designed for patrol in Northern Ireland, on road. with off road capability.

Wolves are very fast , hence many written off in RTC's
They are being replaced by Panther because they are an armoured vehicle against road side bombs, usually modified artillery rounds etc.

Snatches are good at the job designed for , Iraq is not that.

There are plenty of servicemen/women retired and serving  on this forum who have used all the vehicles in anger around the world.

Possible even a Fiat Uno  :D

the thing with the British forces is they are
forced to us what ever they are given
in the Falklands we used the Argie merc 4x4
because they were nicer than the SIII we had
in Iraq we used shoguns and pajero's
again because of the aircon etc
but the vehicles must be squaddie proof
and the LR are this
well almost
like you say the wolf was too quick and numerous rollovers
occured
i was in Ireland in '86 and '88 Long kesh guard and lisbon shield

Yes they are, they are made in Guildford!

(I've had to recover one of their demonstrators when it gave up on the M3, on it's way to fix a broken down one on Salisbury Plain!!)

its all true really - the land rovers will get our troops to the place they need to go without fail, but they NEED to be faster.

Put the Humvee engine in the Defender, and kit it out with a wider track. Or maybe a nice 6.3 V8 Diesel!  :D

The British army started using the generation 2 machines (diesel engines, disc brakes, power steering, 2.5 tonne payload on the 6x6), and as soon as they got the initial teething troubles sorted out, flogged the company to the yanks!!  They're now owned by Stewart and Stevenson, an american company..
