gear oil stench!
« on: March 25, 2007, 20:00:55 »
hi all!
my truck is not feeling well again! :(  after salisbury plains, theres been mega squeeking and grinding underneath,  to the rear. even rolling in nutral its iffy. sometimes it squeeks really loud and when giving it some right foot, you can feel it not getting all of the power. theres no puddles or any signs of leaking hubs, but it stinks of gear oil in the back.
does anyone know what could of happened and how to fix it?
i reckon some crud got in there through worn seals or the oil is very low.
it has been in water and mud quite a bit though. grrrrr, if its not one thing, its another! :x

ive been trying to shake them, but they are ok. and this gear oil smell is new.  if i top up the gear oil, what kind do i need and where does it go? i'm going to see if i can find any trace of muck geting in, then somehow i think it needs to be flushed through.

my diff lock never worked untill my mechanic fixed it last week. maybe through fixing it, it might of made it iffy somehow. haha i have no idea what im on about     8)

gear oil smell  :?
rear axle ?...check the breather pipe is clear

oils... front rear diffs (axle) ep90
main box.. ATF
transferbox...ep90

the muck usualy gets in either through the hub seals....which then would emit a stink of ep90    and then eat away at the bearings as they would be running in crud...giving a horrable crunching sound and general the landy just wouldnt feel right on the road and the breaks would go all spongey

grinding and crunching isnt always a uj, tell tail sign of a u/j is a worse than normal clunk when pulling off and changing gear

gear oil and ep smell very different...does it smell kind of fishy? then its more likely to be axle.

you should try changing the oil in both geartox ,tfr case and axle ...but tbh if its that bad the damage may have already been done.

For what it costs, drain and refill diffs/gearbox/transfer box and hubs

Checking the colour of the oil coming out, lovely brown = no good

If its not been done in a while  its worth a punt

btw the front cv hubs take ep90 or equivalent, I use one shot, bit thicker

I had this smell it was gear oil on the handbrake shoes, seal had gone and oil made the shoes swell a bit and were rubbing when driving, when it got hot it stank!

If you got it muddy then a look underneath should reveal the source of the oil, nothing shifts it.
