More than a 2" lift??
« on: March 25, 2007, 20:56:13 »
Hi guys - new member here,
Right, unable to leave things alone, so far i done the following to my 94 Disco 1 200tdi 5Door

2" pro comp lift
extended stops -  brake lines
Front winch bumpers with Warn Tabor9
Rear Bumper
Safari snorkel
Rear disc. cones
30mm wheel spacers
Rangie spares Flares
285/75/16 BFG Muds. on 8x16 mods.

So far i left the radius arms alone, drives lovely. I do have a noisy front prop, not surprising really, but my attitude was to do the bare minimum and see what happens. The advise i'm after is the following....................

What should I do to the front prop (cheapest safe option)?
To be honest the 2" lift is not really enough are Spring spacers the answer?
Do I need to modify the rear prop?
Springs do not dislocate gonna put on extra droop trailing arms, but what about lowering the shock mounts? Should I do both??

I know some people put like +5" shocks to get the travel - but doesnt this mean that in normal situations the shock is working at the wrong height - does this make a difference??

My advice to anyone thinking of modifying a disco - for what its worth - is go on open the can of worms, its not as daunting as a lot of people may tell you (John Craddock in particular) anything is possible - it is a Land Rover after all!!

Many thanks and look forward to the replies

Rob

My advice would be:
If you want to increase the lift then do it right and get the correctly rate springs and shocks.
My view is that spacers are fine if you have a bit of a lean but not to lift the vehicle as you are using springs rated for a different application. Plus you can get a pair of rear springs for the price of a set of spacers.
You will need to do the front radius arms if you go more than +2" lift as the steering will be all over the place.

If you want to sort out the front prop then get a double cardan prop fitted, either a TD5 one with new front transfer box drive flange or get one made, there are places that will make you one to suit at about the same price as you can get the LR one.
Don't bother with the wide angle props, they vibrate the same as the standard ones do.

Rear prop should be fine, with regular greasing and U/Js in good nick. If you're fitting the cranked trailing arms then Scorpion Racing's ones are able to fit spacers to bring the rear axle back into line and stop any problems.

As for the shocker mounts, if you get the right shocks to suit the springs then you shouldn't need to lower the mounting. You can if you want a bit of extra droop but make sure your bumpstops are lowered to suit so you don't wreck the shocks.

Try a few searches as there are loads of threads in here about lifting mods for the Disco.  :D

why isnt a 2 inch lift enough? are you planning on fitting larger tyres?

There are so many variables that its really hard to give spot on advice. Mine had no vibration and little difference to steering when it had the 2 inch lift tbh. I know people who have done exactly the same and their props have shaken themselves to bits.

i dont mind spring spacer i use them on mine but only because i had spent a fortune already and noone had 4 inch springs available...plus the springs seemed to be fine...i have bought springs b4 that were crap! All springs are different.

Trailing arms are a must if you want to get any kind of travel from your rear axle.

thanks for the advice guys,

think i'm gonna definately get the trailing arms - are some better than others.QT seem to have a good rep?

Front prop needs replacing - think it was a bit knackered to start with.
as for extra height / bigger tyres - i just got really used to the 2" lift quickly and with winch / tools etc it just doesnt seem that high any more - i know it probably is i've just got used to it. When tyres need replacing then yeah 35's
will have to be purchased. thing is i got a bit worried when you listen to all the sceptics - so went with 285/75/16 but with a bit of confidence and common sense then anythings possible.

what i would say is if you havnt had a landy before and dont want to get your hands dirty - dont bother. but if you like a project then go for it. if were gonna get shafted by the government we might as well make the most of it hey!

Once i get round to it pics will go on.
Sorry never made the greenlaning dave but prop really not up to it. will have to head out soon

ONE thing that always seems to be a constant with anything that came off the Solihull production line (up until recently in most cases) was that there was always a degree of "Land Rover tolerance"!!

Some vehicles could be lifted and would be fine, others with the same mods would be a real b1tch on the road and the motor would be "all over the place". Most things will "generally" work and work well, but it's always the last 10% of work thats need to just tweak your specific motor (Imo).

Only thing I'd say is that with plus 2" procomp shock I find that they only just clear the end stops when I reach the rubber bump stop onthe axle, so if I fitted plus3" shock I'd have a problem.  If you fit plus 5" shock then you need some bigger bump stops to protect the shcoks from damage.
