strange one

when I pulled up in work today I turned off the engine took the key out and the battery light on the dash came. If I restart it the light goes out and seems to charge up fine.

Has anyone got any ideas

Sorry but your alternator has shot it take the battery of or you will end up with a flat battery!!!    (I think) 8)  8)

if the alternator was shot, the bat light would be on constant
my thoughts are a short somewhere, however tiz a stange un  :?

the battery is still charging have recently put in new bushes (after last play day). Just going to have to keep disconecting the battery when im not using it until the weekend when I can get a proper look

try owning my land rover  :shock:
you'd commint suicide as soon as you got the keys  :shock:
afink its a short of some kind
remove the + terminal off batt and then just brush it back accross the terminal and see if it arc's...thats a good sign of a short
( make sure everythings off 1st tho  :oops: .... no reason y of course  :roll:   :lol: )

Possibly something in the diode pack has gone a little odd. Does the light stay on?

as soon as you start the engine up it goes out and charges the battery no problem, everything just seems normal. When you turn the ignition off the light comes on and stays on with the keys out. I have taken to disconecting the battery just so I can get back and for to work.

I had a quick look tonight but cant see anything out of the ordinary, even jet washed off the alternator just to make sure there wasn't anything in there that shouldnt be but made no difference at all.

Going take the dash out on Friday and make sure there isn't anything keeping it live in there, if not then I am completely at a loss as to what it might be.

Excuse my ignorance but is the diode pack is the lights on the dash

any more ideas most welcome

Seen it a few times as well - defo keep the battery disconnected or it'll discharge...

It could be the rectifier (diode pack) or the ignition switch thats  doing it, most common one is the rectifier, well, it is on the fleet I work on anyway.......

Diode pack is in the alternator if you take the alternator off and take it to a unit repairer they should test it for you?? 8)

defo diodes shot...they act as a non return valve, in simple terms.  The alternator sounds like it is still charging ok but will allow the battery to drain if engine off & left connected.

There are a bunch of diodes in the back of the alternator.

The alternator itsel produces alternating current (hence the name) that means that the + and - reverse many times a second. This is of no use whatsoever to your landy.

The diodes are used to convert this out to DC, the same format as provided by the battery. The warning light is often wired so it draws a little current from the alternator when you start the car and then the instant the alternator is running the arrangement of the diodes puts the light out unless the alternator is providing less voltage than the battery. Its then that the lamp comes on. A fault in any one of the diodes could cause what you are seeing. In addition theres a regulator pack in there too that stops your alternator belting out 100V+ at 7000 RPM :) Its possible this has also failed.

The lamp will always draw power so it will drain the battery very slowly. The alternator itself will flatten a battery quite quickly without the diodes, after all to the battery its mot much more than a long, stright bit of wire to earth. Another hazard is that the alternator may be overcharging, which is bad for the battery and for you as it produces a very nasty gas which can do you a lot of harm. It may also be passing as into the cars electrical system which isnt good either and will toast the battery.

Probobly a good idea to get it reconed or find another one, warning lights are there for a reason :)

After taking the alternator apart thursday night I decided to get another one. Going to be fitting that today along with the list of other items I ve got to do.
