Battery cut off switch wiring

Well im getting sick of the battery going flat with it being stood, unused, all the time, so i thought i had better get the battery cut off switch wired up that has been fitted since before we bought the 90 :?
So is it just a simple job of putting the wire positive on the battery onto one of the terminals of the switch and then run another cable from the other terminal to the positive on the battery or is it slighty more complicated?
Also what sort of cable should i be using? Im guessing pretty thick stuff! :lol:

I'm guessing, but that sounds about right to me. Either the positive or the negative, not sure what would be the norm.
If theres a harder way to do it I`ll find it!!

If you are using nothing more than a battery cut off switch instead of an isolation switch either battery lead will do.
You can link a 16amp fuse across the terminals to keep all other circuits going if you so wish.

Be aware that this switch is not an any way an anti-theft device.
Also be aware that should you turn the switch off with the engine running. The alternator will continue to supply power to run the vehicle.

Best way is to put it in the earth lead.

Rather than spending £5 on a standard isolator switch best to pay £22 and fit an FIA master switch which kills the engine & protects the alternator when you turn the key. Wiring is simple (it comes with fitting instructions) and you know that in the event of an emergency you only have to hit one key to make everything safe. I have been using these on my LR's for 20-years and they proved to be 100% reliable even after immersion in water.
They add a certain amount of security as unless any thief is carrying a key or can get to the rear of the switch to re-terminate the cables (even assuming they can locate the switch in the first place) the vehicle isn't going anywhere without the aid of a spec-lift or flat-bed.


Normal proceedure with the FIA switch is to inturrupt the +VE cable and yes, a low-rated bypass fuse will provide power for the alarm etc but will not allow the vehicle to be started.
