got to put a new fuel pump in my 89 efi rangie i am asuming that this is a tank out job :?:  :?: any points or tips when doing this :?:

also between the connections in the wiring (pumpwire to loom) there is a length of black plastic  4" long cable tied along the nearside chassis rail, it looks official LR part but what is it :?:

hi muskie ,yeah mate it is tank out i 'm afraid had to do mine on a 87 rangie .it's on top of tank .one problem to watch for is the metal pipe on top of tank mine creased when i lowered tank ani put it all back together only to find on starting that the garge floor was covered in petrol.watch for that ,the pipe gets well rusty and doesnt like being disturbed .all the best robbie.ps in kettering if you need a hand .

forgot to add ..to help the job go smoothly (lol) get some petrol pipe clips before you start as well ||||||||||

ok robbie thanks for that. must admit not really looking forward to doing it saturday, i did consider removing ally floor , jury is out on that at mo.

no i dont yet, saves draining fuel and trying to undo impossible to undo bolts though.

had a quick look and i think i can cut a hole in the rear floor nice and neat to allow access to pump. then fabricate something to recover floor.

Hi mines got a nice square hole cut in the floor.Previous owner did this,must be easier than removeing tank.Make sure you seal the hole well after.Mine lets quite a bit af water in when off road.

Sorry if I'm preaching to the choir here, but a couple of thoughts....

When cutting, don't use anything that is likley to create sparks / heat...  you are directly above the fuel tank

Also, if you are thinking of using something like a jigsaw, make sure you don't use a big long blade....  the last thing you want is to make holes in the top of the tank.

already thought of those things, i am very cautious around petrol. anyway the hole is done, did it with a set of tin snips and a couple of 10mm holes. cut a nice neat hole 100mmx150mm  and believe it or not the fuel pump ended up bang in the centre and also allowed access to the jubilee clip on the metal fuel line. soaked everything in wd40 now and will remove pump tomorrow.

i cannot believe the difference in the rangie now ive changed the fuel pump and filter they both looked like origional parts, out of interest i cut open the fuel filter cannister to see how bad it was, it was clogged solid  :shock: i would imagine that this is what contributed to the fuel pump destroying itself. that was a job well worth doing i just wish it had been a bit higher on my to do list. i will make it priority in future (lesson learnt). the vehicle now responds to the accelerator pedal properly.

if you havent done it, do it now. just worries me that i might use even more fuel now :cry:

put it this way - any gradient steeper than 1 in 20 was almost impossible to climb! Getting out of the place was a task in itself.
