Get the 4.0. It's thirsty, yes, but rarely goes wrong and runs sweet as a nut. The diesel is noisy, rattly and goes wrong too often. When it does, you'll be in for a serious shock in the wallet department. Spares for a diesel are also difficult to get a hold of.

I had a 4.0 and loved it, it only did 12mpg but others tell me they get 20+ easily.  Only the 4.0 has permanent 4 wheel drive and most 4.0 are auto's.  Main drawbacks are lack of space in the rear seats, they are chronic the rear door are tiny!  Oh and they really really suffer from rot but i'm told the later ones are better rust wise........  Don't go near a Jeep dealer for parts either as they are beyond expensive!

My uncle had a diesel for about a month he hated it......  leaf sprung rear and rwd he reckoned the handling was rubbish on the back roads....

Owned a diesel for 2 years.....The ONLY option on earlier XJ's is a 4l

2.5 petrols are nearly as expensive to run as a 4l

later diesels...maybe..but just go for the 4 litre you'll love it

yours is a Grand Cherokee tho, most likely a ZJ/ZG 1996-99, some were fitted with a 249 TC but most were fitted with a 231 which only has part-time 4wd!
