Another Noise Related One...

Hi and thanks for taking teh time to read this thread.

I've got a 1989 90 with a 200tdi conversion. It's started to make a racket from somewhere and I could do with some ideas. The noise is a kind of moaning with vibration that is only apparent on drive. When on over-run or coasting it's silent. It only seems to come on over say 20 miles an hour and is linked to speed ie pitch goes up as the vehicle moves faster. It doesn't follow the gearing but the vehicle speed if you get what I mean.

My guess is the front diff - it was an old one from a RRC when I bought it. I changed the oil in case it was contaminated but it was fine. I also thought that the CVs may be dry but I've topped them off and they didn't need much. The UJ's aren't brand new but they seem ok at the minute. There is a lot of play and slop in the front diff especially, but I can't locate the noise as it travels around the car like mad, as you probably know.

I suppose the next step is to take off a prop and drive in diff-lock to see which end is the noisy un, but I'm a self-confessed lazy git, so if anyone has experience of this, let me know. In the meantime I'm probably looking for either a cheap 10 spline diff or preferably a couple of 24 spline axles! Wish me luck!

Vibratey moaney kind of noise, you could be right about the diff but best to check.  There's a 10 spline on my back step that some-one never collected.

I've got a Detroit 10 spline too if that tempts you

I think the postage would be too expensive from Sheffield! What's a Detroit 10 spline?
