i am going to get another front diff and i am guessing the quickest way to change it is to unbolt both swivel balls to release the half shafts?

Yes but they are heavy.  You will have problems getting a new gasket in there too and you need to remove most of the steering.

The slightly lighter method is to remove the callipers, hubs stub axles and withdraw the halfshafts.
