UJ's sounds possible, had the same and one of the axis of the UJ was knackered, the other was fine, happened around a certain speed, which got worse

I've had a transmission whine from my TD5 Disco on over-run for about 20,000 miles now, but it's not bad enough for it to be obvious where it's coming from, and it's not got worse since it arrived, so I just treat it as characterful  8)

No you will not need a new propshaft unless the splines are very worn.  You can buy UJs at most Land Rover specialists.  Make sure you get the correct type for your propshaft though, and I personally recommend that you go for the Hardy Spicer brand for UJs.

The first method of checking the UJs is basically crawl underneath the Land Rover and yank on the propshaft ends, and see if they have any play in them in any direction.  If they do, then they are probably on the way out.

When was the last time you greased the UJs?

UJ noise is normally louder on overrun not acceleration. Diff input bearings also make a racket in acceleration only when on their way out.

Cheers

When mine were checked they jacked up the front tested, then the back and turned the prop very slowly, this is where the found a tight spot which was the UJ not working on one axis, so thats really the only way to check them properly
