Vitara 8V nearly overheating

Been upto the Lakes today to do a couple of lanes. When traveling on the Motorway I noticed the needle moving towards the red. After turing the heater on to Blow and hot the needle came back to normal. Later in the day during a stop I checked the water (expansion tank full) although a bubbling / boiling sound was coming from the radiator? On my return home I checked again the expansion tank was full and could still hear the boiling / bubbling also a Hiss from the radiator cap. After the engine had cooled I checked again - Expansion tank empty and needed about 1/2 litre of water. The temp has been fine all day providing the heater has been on hot. I am suspecting the radiator cap anyone any pointers. Thanks.

Filled the rad with crud? Blow it out with a jetwash or hose, take it easy though.

Done this a few times :)

Might also have a dodgey radiator cap or pressure leak. Bet if you look in front of the fan at the back of the rad that its caked.

The back of the rad looks OK, not long had a new water pump fitted and the guy the did it had the rad off but don't think he checked it. its been running fine on round town runs for a month or two since the water pump.

Hmm bit sus. Is the rad actually getting warm?

Is there any pressure when you take the cap off? (use a rag to save your hand)

Rad is getting warm. Been OK local but the car never gets a real run until I use it, the other half commutes a mile round trip daily :roll:  Was guessing that it's when the engine is under load, Motorway and lanes etc?

Update: Did the water top up when I got back yesterday and have taken it for a run tonight, only 5-6 miles but gave it some pain and it was at temp, no heater on and no overheating and after turning off no bubbling sound? could it be a sticking stat? re the rad being hot yesterday it could just have just been warm? never realy took much notice I was just thinking how the RAC would get there to fix it

Might be. Off the top of my head I dont remeber where the stat is (must be old age as I was under the bonnet this afternoon). Might be worth taking it out and checking it, dropping a new one in if its not too many pennies. Problems with fuel and ignition can cause overheating too.

Get the hose pipe on the radiator.  As I found out the radiator can conceal quite a lot of crud you can't see when it's on the Vit.

Get a low pressure hose, take the rad grille off, hold the hose close to the rad and slowly work your way across it.

If you feel confident (or have an infra-red thermometer) you can deduce where the cooling system is failing by following the water heat patterns around the radiator, water pump, manifolds etc.

I've just been through all of this, if you need a hand just let me know!

Thanks for the response. after the initial problem I can't make it happen again so have changed the stat anyway. If I do get a repeat I guess the next step will be the rad. I can get hold of a IR thermometer so might just have a play anyway, when you did this how much variation did you get when it was running OK. Thanks

You should get a HUGE temperature drop across the radiator.  It should be hot on top at idle (when it's warmed up, of course) and cool at the bottom.  If it's not cool at the bottom poke around and see if has hot spots.

You can also check the temperature above and below the thermostat (the dome like thing at the other end of the water pipe feeding the top of the rad).  If there's a temperature difference the thermostat is closed.

For engine health (i.e. running temperature) check the temperature of the exhaust headers.  They should never get above 150 deg C and ideally should be less.

Problem solved "maybe" I tried all the sugested stuff and with no luck as it nearly overheated again. I have checked the viscous coupling on the fan and its not working :oops: Instead of replacing the unit I think I will go electric is there a Kit that is a direct replacement. Thanks for all your help.

I dont think there is.
You'll need a stat and fan, plus wiring. As its going in a Vit engine bay use good connectores such as the superseal ones simtek sell. It'll need to go on a new circuit as there isnt anything man enough on the loom as it stands.

Running it all the time will rob a fair few HP :(

Stat can be had from just about anywhere, I belive both paddocks and d4x4 carry them. Fan, you should be able to get from a scrappy, VAG aircon fans are small and damn powerful and a relay depending on the stat. Make sure the relay coil/stat is supplied from the ignition else you'll get the fan 'running on' after you turn it off. That said I know a fair few cars that do this. And remeber you only have a 40A alternator on an 8V carb as standard.

Or you could beg a viscous unit of someone for a few beer tokens :)

OR get a fron mounted fan and have both :)

Kenlowe and Pacet both do generic fans in various sizes but they will be expensive........£100 ish

Id be off down the scrappy, i seem to remember a escort diesel fan is nice and thin also a chavalier gsi fan is a nice fit....
