Disco vibrator... Diff???

Howdo,

Here's a puzzle for ya!

Steering has become a bit grabby i.e. When turning there's like a touch of stiffness.
There's a new vibration that's really bad. But it only happens when power is on so not when coasting or slowing down. It isn't through the steering it's the whole car that shakes!
Also there's a high pitch clank kinda noise from the front axle when taking up drive. It sounds like it's coming from the diff but i could be wrong.

I'm reckoning on the pinion bearings.

Any ideas?

Mine has the vibration as you describe but less severe, last time it was a prop u/j.  I have lots of play in my front diff tho' and a new noise that i think is the transfer box so we will see.........

It doesn't seem to do it when it's cold only after the first mile or so. It's the stiff steering that makes me think it's the diff.

I'll try greasing the uj's and see if it makes a difference.

Same problem I had, found and changed a very badly worn UJ at the weekend. Drives like a dream now.

Ok, well an update....

I've removed the front prop and yup the front UJ is screwed!  The bearings a shot to pieces!  But I'm sure I can still hear a grating noise from the front diff, guess i'll put a new UJ on and then see what it sounds like.

Any ideas on how to remove the UJ??  I've removed the circlips soaked it all in WD40 and given it a good bit of tapping with the universal removal tool (hammer) but it ain't budging!

S'pose I'll continue hitting it tomorrow!

I've decided Disco's are ungrateful!  Last week a brake disc shattered so it's had two new discs last week, it's just had a new nice shiny winch and bumper and also I've sorted out the rear body mounts and now the bloody prop decides to give up and maybe the diff!!!

stiff stearing could be trackrod end and draglink ball joints seized/semi-siezed

happens all the while in my 90, just clout them with a hammer on top a couple of times, usualy does the trick  :roll:

check the wheel bearings aswell for that whine

Steering could also be the steering shaft under the bonnet try wd40 on the knuckles & if that helps they need changing, not ot bad a job to do.

Any ideas on how to remove the UJ?? I've removed the circlips soaked it all in WD40 and given it a good bit of tapping with the universal removal tool (hammer) but it ain't budging!

Drive the bearings out from one side with a snug fitting socket/drift. The old needle roller housing will stick out the other end of the yoke by a few mill before everything goes solid. Get some sturdy grips, preferably a vice, and clamp the housing that's sticking out in the vice jaws and give the whole lot a good a good twisting and pulling. It will come out eventually. Then reverse the process and drive the opposite side housing out the same way. The uj will then come apart, with a little 'jiggling'.


Press the new bearings in carefully, a vice is useful . . . watch out for the needles rollers getting displaced when you press the housings back in . . . .

Steering could also be the drive belt slipping.

As for the UJ you need to hit it harder.  Try dropping the yolk into a bowl of boiking water for a minute first.
