SwiveL Housings (Disco 300tdi)

Hi guys,

Some of you may have read my post about my wheel locking (a broken bearing).

I am now real worried about driving the car and want to go over it with a bit of a fine tooth comb to sort out any work needed.

I have removed the stub axle and the swivels internals look OK, lubricated etc.

The problem is that on hard lock they weep, drip, drip.

I could do without servicing them now but do you think that is OK?

If they do go wrong coud they potentially lead to a broken jammed wheel.

Thanks

Chris

If you have stripped down the unit, why not fit a new seal on the back of the swivel, only got a ring of bolts to remove

Me personally considering the cause of the failure, would change everything, if the cv is ok fine, but the wheel bearings, swivel bearings, and all seals got to be worth doing, new locking tabs and if needed nuts as well if they have been hammered on or off and are chewed up

Not every problem can be solved with duct tape, and it's exactly for those situations we have WD 40

My 200tdi swivel leak was caused more by play in the swivel bearings than the seal itself.  The kit to rebuild mine wasnt expensive.  I did everything but the chrome ball and it wasnt that bad a job either.

I was just about to say!

Weeping seals will usually be caused by either a pitted swivel ball, or by excessive wear in the bearings, inwhich case the swivels bearing will need replacing.

The wheel jamming my had damaged the swivel bearings, so it could be worth doing anyway.

As you've got to remove the ball from the axle to replace the oil seal, it'll be worth giving it all a thorough once over. Any sign of play or wear and replace them - it's not a job you'll want to repeat in a years time!
