Is it worth welding ?

I use 1.2mm steel for bodywork, which is thicker than the original by a bit. Don't weld galv, the weld will be poor due to the presence of the zinc, plus inhaling (sickly sweet smell) will give you 'Zinc Flu'. When I was considerably more ignorant and stupid I welded some galv and inhaled the fumes. Flu is a good description of how it makes you feel - two days of feeling really crap - weak, sick feeling in the stomach, etc. The fumes are poisonous and in the long term are damaging to your lungs. The zinc turns into a fine white powder that hangs in the air - you inhale bits of burnt zinc.

MIG welding was originally adopted because it creates less heat, therefore less distortion.  TIG is the preference of restorers becasue it causes even less.  TIG is hard though, it's a bit like electric gas welding but if you crash the tip you break it.

MIG, easy, cheap, quick, least damaging.  Has the added bonus of a small cannister of fire extinguishant being part of the welding process, just in case some old underseal catches light

If that fails another guy I know who does a good job welding and loves to get his welder out when he can is Matt_h . Maybe drop him a pm. He is only over in Chineham. He is a top bloke. He did my boot floor for me in a weekend.

top bloke :)  ace ta james..

Yeah I'm a welder... James wanted the full on boot floor replacement job doing which takes about 4 hours or so depending on how hard it is to get the tank out (I prefer to remove everything if at all possible)

to be honest though if there are small holes I think the best bet is to weld patches over and thoroughly wax oyl everything after.. it'll probably last longer than the rest of the car after that.

To do a few patches if you do the prep work I'll only charge you enough to get me a takeaway from hook tandoori (mostly cus after welding I'm too tired to cook!)

I'll pm you as well!

Matt_H has done a top job of the welding for me. Ended up welding more holes than first expected. Top job and a top man to boot.

Even had a go myself.

James..... to earn commision you must have sold something!  Perhaps you should give me an hour of your time - like that film about passing on the good deeds which I forget what it is called.

Talking of which I finished the front drive - you got out of that one lightly!  I can recommend the mix on site people though £150 and the chap even levelled the concrete for me :)

yeah but weven i think mixing 4 tonnes of concrete is beyond the average person in a day!  Perhaps Super-James can do it - but only if you wear a lycra suit with SJ on the front!
