Bigger Alternator.
« on: April 16, 2007, 19:44:41 »
Right all.

I have a 1984 110, with a 2.5 nad in. It also has PAS.

I need a bigger alternator, so was wondering. What is the biggest one i can fit, without having to do many mods. I have been told the one from the 200tdi will fit. But dont want to buy one, and find out the hard way, it wont.

All help greatly appreciated. :D

Most alternators are interchangeable.
If the lugs are in the wrong place, just undo the three bolts that hold the alternator body together and twist the front one way and the back the other to line the lugs up.

The only other thing is you might need to change the terminals on the wires at the back of the alternator. Plug to ring connector.

A third thing to look for is the "W" terminal. You can the fit a rev counter.

You can also change from a multi grooved pulley to a "V" belt pulley.

Well, the braket that the alternator sits on had to come off and i drilled it right through and put one long bolt through both the back and the front mount of the alternator..

The reason i did that was because for some reason the alternator sheered the front mounting bolt.

The only thing with this alternator is that you have to have the V belt really really tight cos it will tend to try and slip with high loads...

A poly V belt would be better to run this alternator.. but mine works ok

ive put a granada scorpio one on mine 120 amp but ive had to convert to a single v pulley ,used to be multi v ,which considering the alternator has to top up 1600 amps of battery (x2) it does well
trouble is when heavy winching belt melts as alternator load increases..
does a 300 multi v pulley fit a 200??
or do they do a multi v pulley   etc ??
was looking at a battery management system but phew   loads of money !!
any help be good ...cheers trev

I don't want to hi jack this post...

Trev.
Why would you need a battery management system.
What actually does it do apart from make a lot of money for the sales people.
