OK so last week I decided to fix the UJ that had been going for ages. Dropped the rear prop off. Drifted (and ground out) the offending UJ. Got dark. Went to work front wheel drive only. Got home fitted new UJ refitted rear prop.
Next day drive to work and there is this really 'orrid squeeling noise. 'Oh darn' thinks I (yeah right, put a few astrixs in there) I screwed the job up and the new UJ is kaput.
Couldnt do anything about it on saturday as I was driving support for a D of E
group near leek. Daisy stayed at home and I went in our Ignis with 12 rucksacks in it. Damn shame as white peak would have suited Daisy even if there was no where to go on a greenlane.
This morning dropped rear prop off and went for a test spin as the UJ seemed fine. Squeel still there. Took off hand break drum. squeel still there. Checked ep90 in transfer box, OK. Greased a few things and checked rear bearings. Test spin and the squeel is STILL there.
Check oils all round, check bearings on front. Check for stones wedged in stone guards, check belts. Nothing. still squeeling like a stuck pig.
Last thing I could think to check was the front prop (already checked before dropping off the rear). Dropped it off and low BOTH UJs on the front pop had gone (chunk missing off the cup of one). They were fine before I replaced the back UJ. Must have just been on the edge and the extra strain of 2wd did for em. 5 hours it took me (with coffee breaks).
Good job they didnt let go entirly when the rear prop was off. That would have been embarrasing
