Nice new disco for me. Advice please

I have just had permission from she who must be obeyed to purchase a new (to me) Disco. My budget is £10,000. But i'd rather spend half that if possible.

So what should I expect to get for that money and what should I be looking out for ie problems areas?

wotcha matey,
with a budget of 5K you get get something quite decent. What are you going to be using it for?
Check things like the load area floor and sills if you can. How often has it been off road, has it ever had diff lock engaged, play in prop shafts gearboxes etc.
Personally, I like the basic TDi engines. Easy to maintain and not much electrical gubbins to go wrong.
I don't know where Tadley is, but if you want an extra pair of hands to poke, prod and yank about any perspective purchase, give me a PM.

Thanks mate. Tadley is near Basingstoke. I will be using it for commute to work and fishing, so mostly off road in winter around wet muddy lake banks and sumberged flooded farm tracks

snorkel: raised air intake, goes out the wing, up the pasenger door pilar. u dont want water being sucked into the turbo

wading kit: extentions for axle breathes and some other things i dont know yet. im getting a kit soon, as i've alerady got crud in my rear axle and had to splash out to fix it :oops:  :(

floatation bags: like arm bands 8)


if you're using it offroad, i'd highly recomend really good front and rear recovery points,you will wish you had them if/when you get stuck, and under protection. like diff guards, tank guard (just got one 8) ) steering guard (after sunday, i now need one) and rock sliders (ned one too, as i have a wavey drivers door!! :shock: ))

My mates got a excellent condition top of the range K reg 200TDi £1800
Why spend more than that? Buy a cheap Vitara or SJ for off roading £500

=£7,700 for holidays etc
And think of the depreciation??? £10k LR will be worth £4k in 5 years if you are lucky

Pretty basic then. and if he does buy it the 1st thing he should do is put the £7k in his piggy bank to pay for all the replacement parts he'll need to buy. as the ones on the 14 year old disco start to die.

I own a K reg disco and if they're all you can afford they're fine but I wouldn't advise anyone to buy one if they can afford to spend more.

Cheers gents some interesting points. I have a G reg (which is for sale). She has never let me down, but I have to be on call with my job and can't afford to be let down on the way to a job. Although a doubt she ever will, it plays on my mind that she will one day. I would feel better if I had a newer vehicle. I see no point in selling her to buy one 2 years younger. I want to buy something much newer and keep it until its as old as this one. Look after it and then I will know it inside out.

I will be looking to put a snorkel on it. Havn't decided on anything else yet. I just don't want to get ripped off and so I am after advice on what I can expect for my money. I have to say there is a massive difference in what you get between £5000 and £10,000. Some of the wagons advertised for £5000 have more mileage than my old G reg. That worries me.

I'm in the same boat as you Lyndon, about to sell my 110 CSW as soon as the bulkheads been swapped for a new one.  I'm looking around the same budget as you, and what i've found is that landrover are doing TD5 DII's for 10 - 11k but like you say they've got about 60k on the clock..  I did see one for 10grand and it only had 22k on the clock (sounds more like it..and it's got a warrenty :)  )
