few problems with my rangy....
« on: April 25, 2007, 01:52:12 »
firstly i have lost all lights apart from main beam, front drivers side sidelight, brake lights, number plate lights and indicators...... any ideas, is this a comon problem or am i special.

and it dont like going into reverse, i think this might be linked to the large whinning noise when in movment in any gear at any speed. how do i tell what gearbox i have? it is manual, with a transit lump if this helps.....

and last of all it goes wherever the fook it wants. its all i can do to keep it on the black stuff let alone betwean the white lines!!!!! would this be the track rods or bushes or both?

Ok, i am no mechanic so most of this is probably wrong!  Have you checked the fuses for the lights?  Most common fault along with bulbs.

Gearbox thing i have no idea about.

Steering thing sounds like drop arm ball joint.

Lordy that sounds like a project you have there mate.

Lights, well you don't say what yuear so i can't say if there are any relays in there but to only have main beam sounds like fuses, the feed tot he dip switch comes form the combined side/head light switch on the column (on mine).

Revers is sticky, hm try bleeding the clutch and you can adjust the clutch pedal throw too with an eccentric on the pedal.  Check gearbox oil level/

Whining? oil level again perhaps?

Vague steering.  Is it lifted?

With the car stationary open the drivers window and reach in, wiggle the steering wheel and watch the offside road wheel,  If it flicks left and right then good, if the whloe car slews left and right then bad (panhard rod bushes), if nothing happens then very bad, balljoints or steering box (or swivle bearings :o ).

Bit more detail needed though to be precise.

As an afterthought, the lights could be the switch????

hi. cheers for the replies.

i live in bolnhurst if you know where that is....

it is an a reg, had 13 owners so lord noes what is left of the original that came out the factory!!!!

it is a bit of a project (got mot tho so must be good........), bought it for my first 4x4, slowly getting more inclined to hurry up and put the v6 in the womans IIa lwb........

its not lifted. ill have a better look tomorrow see if i can see any thing.

it is well over due for a birthday, it needs new front springs as the standard wheels sit almost in the archs and new shocks all round i recon....  lack of funds means it is staying as it is for the moment (till next month).....

It needs that front suspension sorting before you can really expect anything other than bad handling.

If it's still on 205  tyres then the OEM shocks are ok, and cheap as the proverbial.

Next up are Monroe, a good unprgrade but the back ones tend to fail

Or ProComp, my preference, or DeCarbon, I've also used with success, both for around £35 a corner.

Yes I know you said springs but both really need doing, police spec springs will give you a small amount of lift and set you back £60 ish

In the meantime do check those bushes.

out of interest - if theres atranny lump under the bonet - and your still on V8 shocks and springs then that'd put everything out as the lumps are differing weights - tranny i sheavier.. so try some disco shocks and springs - from a tdi.. MAY help!
or get tracking and caster set up..also try the silly things like tyre pressures - and swap front to back wheels around.. all free and simple mods (If they work - lol)

i have eventualy put some heavy duty standard hight springs, and new shocks on the front of my old bag.
it drives like a completely new machine, i can acctually do 60 without the front skipping and judering......

only trouble now is i need to do the back as it sits high at the front!!!

fond a little rust in it as well, the drivers side sill isnt attached to much, infact it doesnt really egsist!!!! and ive got cracks in the b posts at the bottom of the windows.... is this a common problem??

still havent got round to sorting the dip out, how ever i have all sidelights now front and rear. it has to be the switch, so im gonna get me wire cutters out over the weekend.......

oh and it now has a transit throttle cable!!! and passenger side wing mirror is a transit one. the green lane between bolnhurst and keysoe is a bit tight!!!!!

 cheers guys.
