Ignition barrel issues...sorted & lessons learnt!

Help guys, I have a big problem!  My ignition barrel gave up the ghost yesterday (key would not turn) and I nearly ended up stuck 180 miles from home.  After 20 mins of faffing I got the key to turn and made it home, needless to say when I got home I was back to square one.

I had a look on Difflock.com (sorry...) http://www.difflock.com/magazine/Step-by-step_guides/Discovery_Ignition_module.shtml as there is a pictorial article on how to change the lock, the only problem is that it says at the bottom that the vehicle recognises that the ignition barrel has been tampered with and needs to have the immobiliser deactivated.

Problem is I don't actually have an immobiliser keyfob, I lock the truck via the drivers door key and the light under the radio does flash.  If I fit the new barrel, and then lock/unlock on the driver's door key, will this do the job?

Incidentally, a mate of mine is breaking a 300Tdi the same as mine, and he does have a fob.  Is there any way I can get this fob reprogrammed to work on my truck?

Getting your fob re programmed shouldn't be a problem... this has to be done for replacement fobs anyway... Give Wolston a call, they may be able to do it.

OK job done!  I have to say it was easy peasy, ignore the difflock.com article (Mud Club rules!!)

I got hold of a 2nd hand barrel off a mate's scrapper.  Funny thing was, it was an auto, mine's a manual, and they are identical, which kinda discredits the difflock theory.  In addition, LR only quote one part number, and you don't have to undo all the wiring, just undo the two grub screws and remove the switch part of the mechanism and put it onto the new barrel.

Secondly, ignore the Dremmel advice!  I'd dug mine out the shed with a load of discs ready to go, but two well placed taps on the shear bolts with a hammer and a screwdriver and they were soon finger loose (rather worryingly!).  Swapping the barrels was a 5 minute job, so thanks for the offer Skibum but she's a runner again!

Disco I's are prone to "sticky ingnition barrels" - remember to keep 'em lubed - as per my RAC man mate :D
