Disco II electronic autobox into a defender 90?
« on: May 01, 2007, 11:39:24 »
Hi,

I'm considering doing a full chassis rebiuld of my 90. With new TD5 chassis, engine, etc. Has any body tried fitting the discovery electronic auto box to a defender with a TD5 engine.

Would I need a disco TD5 engine and box/transfer and asociated wiring harnesses? Also does the box need the Body Control Unit to be in the loop?

Finally what is the general opinion of having an auto in a defender? I was planning on chipping and fitting a larger intercooler to compensate for the increased drain from the box.

Many thanks

Adam

consensus is to convert it to hydraulic as it's a lot simpler. Either way, Ashcroft do a kit or the individual parts to install it in a 90 to either TDi or TD5.

Trying to run the Disco BCU will just get over complicated.

Ashcrofts kits is probably the easiest... but....

The other option is from Stunned Buffalo - http://www.stunnedbuffalo.demon.co.uk/gearbox.html - who do a aftermarket controlled for ECU controlled ZF gearboxes... AFAIK they do one suitable for the Disco box.

Thanks very much for those replies.

My main concern is how well the car will drive with an auto and tuned TD5 engine? Also are auto defenders a nightmare to sell?

Not necessarily a nightmare to sell as they're like rocking horse droppings in terms of rarity, but there's always someone out there looking for an auto defender.

Auto box and tuned TD5 works very well, especially with the electronic P38 / D2 box - the controller can be re-mapped to suit the engine and driver demands, which is easier than trying to change the brake bands, torque convertor etc on a non-electronic auto. Having said that, box rebuilds do seem to work well.

The only problem you will have is paying for it!
