converting a 110 to 90
« on: May 02, 2007, 15:45:20 »
Helllo one and all

I'm in the process of buying a 110 Hicap 2.5 NA Deisel  and planning on shrinking it to 90

has anyone done this and if so anyone got any tips??

I'm also thinking of doing an LPG enrichment on the engine so has anyone heard of this on the 2.5 NA (I know its been done on the TDI with great success)

cheers

Erm, gonna sound daft I know, but I'm sure it's cheaper to buy a 90 and not shrink it. Gonna be a lotta work for not a lotta gain. Moving fuel tanks, chopping chassis, shortening props, cropping cross members and rear overhang etc etc.

As for LPG on 2.5na - should work, but a turbo engine supplies more air for combustion. There will be gains, but not as large as on a TD engine. I'd also watch for the bottom end (crank etc) shuffling about under load, the na engines didn't have the stiffest bottom-ends in the world.

Try contactcing Allisport or IP Fuels for details.

but its a challenge   and i'm getting the 110 for £450 with recent recon box and engine (now everyone is gonna say i'm paying toomuch :? ) and i don't fancy the silly money you pay for a 90 (already got a rear tub lined up for £50)

thanks for the engine info , will follow that up

What do you want to shorten it for 110's handle better on the road then a 90 does and have twice the storage capacity and unless you're into extreme challenge events will go anywhere a 90 will go.

Above all the work...

You'd also have the joys of a SVA - as you will be modifying the chassis away from standard specification.  At best, you will be able to keep the existing ID - at worse it would end up on a Q plate.

£450! If it's not a rot-box, then you've snagged a bargain!

How about a compromise then - 100"?

thinking of trialling/CCV/comp safari  as my disco (however modified) is a bit big for that  :) plus I might not manage to blow a salisbury diff as easily as I have the disco ones

and the only rot is on the rear cross member (and it comes with a replacement) and a bit on the bulk head so not too bad really

go for it - chop it up

it will be a great experience.

it can be much different from chopping a range rover chassis down to make a 90 out of it. we did one a couple of years ago - see my galleries..a 4x4 is born

Apart from the fact the Land Rover will be registered as a 110 - but on a 90 chassis.  So the chassis is no longer to original specification

Why not tidy up the 110 a bit, sell it on for a bit of a profit, and put that towards a pukka 90?

Just a thought

If you do go for it I could know someone that would be VERY interested in buying the rear bulk head, rear body and all the mountings off of it, least that would give you some funds to put back into it. 8)

You could leave the wheelbase the same and bobtail it.

I already have a request for the tub and fittings from the guy i'm borrowing the trailler from but may have the bulkhead as I think the 90 tub I have lined up comes with seat boxes (is that the same???, iv'e not worked on defenders before only disco's so i don't know)

cheers
