Really long M12 bolts !
« on: May 03, 2007, 18:40:15 »
In order to fit my (Mill Services) tree bars to the Defender, I need some 200mm long, M12 bolts - the existing bulkhead to chassis bolts are not quite long enough.

Does anyone know where I might get said bolts from ?

I've tried : Ifor Williams spares, Namrick bolts, all the DIY sheds, a local car parts place, Google and many others - none of whom seem to stock anything over 150mm in length.

I did consider using a piece of studding, with a nut on either end - but how do you know if the studding is high-tensile steel ?. I know that HT bolts have 8.8 stamped on the head, but what/where is the marking on studding ?

Thanks
Jim

Didn't think stainless was high-tensile - but would love to be proved wrong. As the bolts will be holding the bulkhead to the chassis, don't want to fit the wrong product !

Stainless is not hight tensile. In fact it's nowhere near as strong as that carrot stuff they call 8.8 which I wont use.....

You can buy hightensile studding. My fastener people sell it. In fact any good fastener copmany should be able to supply bolts in that lenght. Look in yellow pages.

12. whatever as they're a lot stronger. I can snap 10mm 8.8 like a carrot with my knuckle bar...........

I should add. I use 8.8 for non stressed areas like bodywork. Especially those 6mm bolts that are a pein to get at to undo. They just shear off

I just used the bolts that were there. I did not need longer ones. I have Mill Services sill bars fitted.

I earn my living as an Engineering Buyer, PM me if you need a source in your part of the world.  M12 x 200 shouldn't be a problem for any reasonable fastener supplier.

Give AHC Fasteners in Camberley a call 01276 709069.

They do mail order and have a webshop as well.  They're only a few miles from my house, and every time I've asked for a particular size bolt the answer has been along the lines of "did you want passivated coated or stainless steel".

I was thinking of AHC as well.  There's very little they don't have.  If you want a 17/32" UNC self-tapping bolt with an octagonal head cast in molybdenum, they'll probably have one.

And the chequerplated 90 that's often in the layby there belong to someone who works there (or perhaps it's the owner, I'm not sure).  First time I ever went in there we got into a discussion about the relative benefits of turbo charging a Chevvy 5.7L engine in a Dakar!

what you mean is you can't judge when your over tightening something! 8.8 is a normal tensile that is used in most everyday items. i work on hgv's and use 8.8 bolts on a daily basis, they've never let me down yet.[/quote]

Try http://local.google.co.uk and search for fixings or fastening suppliers in your area.

I was just thinking the same thing.. the company i work for builds equipment for use on navy ships all around the world (chilled water plants) they are almost completely bolted together with 8.8 bolts, the only time we use stronger is when the fixing is loaded (ie end caps on a presurised vessel) we don't have problems with bolts snapping...

perhaps those that regularly snap 8.8 bolts should introduce themselves to Mr torque wrench...
