please pay close attention in the story to the location of the parents compared to where the child was!

its a very bad thing to happen but even so you cant just leave a 3yr old in an apartment in a foreing country on their own sleeping... kids wake up etc...

Agreed its very sad, but again no way would I leave my child like that.

Though I do remember being left in 1972 when I was 7 in a chalet in Butlins with a stack of sweets and comics, while everyone else went for a jolly in the evening, we where at the mercey of the red coat baby sitters :?

You do have to wonder about the parents.  Horrible as this is, they are partly to blame whatever the outcome, you simply cannot leave a 3yr old on their own, sleeping or not whilst you go out for a meal!

I hope she turns up and all is well.

We have a three year old daughter, and I can only imagine how the parents are feeling, especially that they are to blame for the matter, however I hope that they find her quickly and the authorities pull out all the stops to do so.

This has happened only about 45 mins from me, what I cant belive is that the childs parents are both Docters, why would they leave a child alone even for 10 mins let alone to go for dinner. Its as if people come here on holiday and leave common sense at home.

Well there are three possible scenarios here:

The Child has somehow wandered off
Foul play by persons unknown
Foul play by the family

Nothing can or should be discounted until the full facts are known.  Let's just hope it is safely and happily concluded.

I can see the thinking...  "Shall we go out?"  "No, can't leave the kids."  "We'll only be around the corner...  we can pop in every few minutes to make sure they're OK."  "Alright then, I'm sure they'll be fine."

Probably doesn't seem such a good idea with hindsight.

I know next to nothing about young children but I do know you don't leave them unattended.

This is awful. Its so similar to the Leoni Keating case in Great Yarmouth. Why leave your kids unattended? There is no excuse for it.

this is awfull, and i really hope they find her safe and sound..

but those parents deserve the anguish they are going through for leaving 3 tiny kids unattended while they were boozing it up in a restaurant...

when i heard the news i thought they must be a couple of teenage scally parents, but they are both doctors....

Got to agree with you all, I have three kids from 18 months to 6 years, I dread the summer holidays as it means endless hours on a beach trying to keep an eye on them, up and down to the sea to get endless buckets of water, they are the greatest achievements of my life for which both of us would give our last breath, you simply can not leave them on their own!

Rant over sorry.

Oh how things have changed in this country. Certainly when I was a child I could play out all day. I did that. At eight I went all over by myself locally.

If those parents had left that child in this country they might have beeen in trouble, However they are doctors does that mean that they would take action against a parent who left a child of that age unattended.

ive got two girls and you seem to get this false security feeling when on holiday, but its possibly worse than at home. more outsiders from every different part of the country or world and nobody knows them from adam. we go down to cornwall every year lovely quite place not many people and them you see are always nice. one week we were there a holiday maker got raped on the beach. dont know weather they cought him or not, but it just shows. hope they find this little girl must be terrifing for her. alan.....

Um....we've left the kids in the caravan while we've sat outside (8 and 10) - say 50 yards away - at shows. Anyone else?

At the end of the day it looks like this was foul play - and I'll not be letting them in there on their on now :(

I would never, & have never left my daughter on her own, she is my n°1 priority at all times, she never leaves my sight when out & about, although she doesn't always know I'm making sure she's ok, I always am. These peope have made a mistake, a terrible mistake, that will live with them for the rest of their lives (whether Madeline is found alive or not) we shouldn't say it's what they deserve, because no-one "deserves" what they're going through, or what that poor girl may have been through. I can't imagine the pain that that family are experiencing at this moment & I hope you never do.

This makes my blood boil! I work in the village where this family comes from its been taken over by press and tv crews in the last fortnight trying to scrape up dirt. I have a little god sun who is 3 I won't let him out of my sight he is more than capable of opening the front door yep it takes a while for him to fetch summat to stand on and fiddle the chain but it can be done they are clever little so and so's when they want to be.

I also think if the childs mother had been 16 and a single mum off the local council estate the authorities would have hung, drawn and quartered here by now. seems ok to leave a 3 year old if ya a doctor though.

Hope they find her safe and sound.

 When I first heard about this story, I assumed that they were at a bar situated at the base of the apartment block they were staying in, but the plan showed the flat to be a good walk away going past a swimming pool.  I have two children, 4  and 6, if you have kids you sacrifice a part of your life eg: going out to bars etc, to look after them.
When I was about 5 (in the 70's), and living in Nairobi, my mum left me in her unlocked car to go to the super market, the delivery boy came back without her to put the shopping in the car and I beat the living hell out of him with my bare hands!!
The parents, I am sure, are being punished enough, self reproach is worse than anything.
Please God they find her.

I dont want to argue about the whats and who etc. My only concern is that the poor little girl is found safe and well, i have 2 children 4 and 5 yrs i cannot imagine life without them. The hurt these parents are feeling must be truly unbearable and more than enough punishment to carry with them for the rest of their days. I truly do hope she is returned soon and safe ,god bless.

Unfortunately not unbearable enough for them to start lobbying the government and create a media frenzy.  Funny how they want everybody in the whole country to sort their mess out for them isn't it?

I'm sorry, but they are adults and parents.  This incident, whilst tragic, is of their own doing.  As with society in general these days, they are not taking responsibility for their actions.

Oh, and I'm sure they'll like the royalty cheques when they make the movie about the whole thing as well.

And if they do find who took her, lets hope they suffer for their actions (although they'll probably just be put in a prison, be fed 3 times a day and be given a nice widescreen telly with a playstation to keep them entertained).

Fair point ,i personally in no way condone what they did, totally lacking in responsibility and common sense especially when it was 3 children!!!!. In this day and age child security should be the one and only priority in your life (if you have kids  ). We went to Tunisia a couple years back and were in our room sometimes as early as 6.00pm as kids exhausted with no evening meal for us but one of us could still pop down to get a snack if we needed leaving one always with kids, sacrifice you make for them.

I feel SO sorry for the child and her family but the parents should be arrested for neglect, sod the pain they are feeling they deserve it!

Callous but they do!

I would not even pop next door with out taking my two children with me if no one else was in!

We will probably eventually discover she just woke up crying and went to find mummy and daddy and has stumbled to her death.. I sincerely hope not though for her sake I hope with all my heart she will be found safe and sound.

Hi

i have to say that i agree with all that has been said - whilst i hope and pray that Maddy is returned home - why on earth did the parents not take advantage of the babysitting that was available.

we were in a similar situation with L&J, we were in a hotel for a 50th birthday party, the girls were about a year old.  we had a room that we could see from the restaurant.  we went back every half an hour to make sure that the baby sitter was not derelict in her duties - the poor girl probably thought we were crazy but our children are the most important things.  we have never left them alone, as previous parents have said - we gave up our right to a quiet life and dinners without kids once the girls were born.

whilst i can understand the distress this must be causing the parents - they are making a meal out of it
