Hi revving 3.9 V8
« on: May 04, 2007, 14:04:30 »
Hi there,

Hopefully somebody can tell me why my V8 Range Rover is revving so hi.

It does it weather on LPG or petrol, sometimes going up to 1500 rpm & then other times running at 600 rpm but mostly stays at 1100 rpm 90% of the time. I've changed the petentiometer for a second hand one, not much different :(

I'm new to Land Rovers & only had this for about a month, couldn't resist adding a 2" lift & 235/85/16 machos on disco one alloys though  :D

Just tell me where to take it to get it covered in mud....I'm based in Coventry at the moment.

Hi Edy,

It revs up constantly but every now & then it will rev at the proper revs on start up & stay like that until you switch it off.

Then as soon as you start it up again its high revving again.

Oh by the way were are these places in Coventry then, I haven't even took it off road yet, I want to see what this baby will do.

When this came up recently I was surprised to learn that the ECU has a trick up it's sleeve, if the battery voltage is low then the ECU steps up the idle speed to give the battery a kick, especially after start up

Well I've changed the battery for a new one as came back the other day after being away for two days & it was dead.

Its still the same though so I'm going to look at the stepper motor as suggested.

Any more ideas would be welcome.

Your alternator may be dishing out marginal low volts sometimes, that could explain both the battery and the idle.

Check with voltmeter, you expect more than 13.5v at idle. Load it up with headlights and see that it doesn't drop too much.

cheers,

I'll get that checked as my new battery nearly went flat yesterday.

I'm not sure whats going on but I think it might be something to do with my head unit being wired up to a permanent live as It keeps losing radio stations, I've since disconnected it & the battery seems fine.

It still revs high thou  :(
