Do I, Don't I
« on: May 06, 2007, 15:18:13 »
Having spent a fair bit getting my 90 looking better and ready to off road with all of us in it etc...

After the Broxhead event she wondered if a Disco might be better as a family off road toy...More comfort for her and the kids, less noise etc

So should I? We don't do anything too extreme, play days and green lanes is about it, but would like to use if to go camping as well..

So should I sell and change?

Also if I were, what is the last year they made the TDi, don't want a TD5.
Although not sure how much I will have to spend, but needless to say it will need all the pretty bits ripped off and nice off road bits put on

Get a disco, 1998 they stopped making the tdi iirc.  The best one to get though is about an n-reg, cos they are alot cheaper, and dont have so much wrong with them!

Do you want a disco? Or is it just your partner?

That is a good question, I always prefered Defenders, but I have to think about the family 1st and for that reason I guess a Disco makes more sense, although they are capable of doing more than I will need I know that to put all the kit on them cost more than the Defender, rock slidders bumpers, steering guards etc, but not looking to change again soon, and also depends on what I can get for my 90 I guess.

But also I would be looknig at putting a TDi into the 90 in the next year which will make it run better, but not eliminate the reason for the Disco, so I gues it would be better to sell the 90 as is rather than spend out on that side of it as well.

For what you could get for the 90, you can get a rather tidy Disco.

I went from a 110 300Tdi to a #disco 300Tdi last year...

I sold my battered 1995 110 Hardtop, with 180,000 miles on it for £3000, and bought an imaculate, 1996 'N' reg Disco, with 100,000 miles on it for £2200...

I miss the 110 when we do some tough off-roading, but I like the disco, its comfy, capable, warm/ cool when needed... and now i've done few minor mods (trimmed the front bumper, fitted new rear bumper, steering protection, rock sliders and mud tyres) it'll go almost anywhere my mates 90's will go..

we don't do competitive stuff, just green lanes and weekends away.. we bought it for a trip to morocco last summer, and enjoyed every minute of it, the comfort and air-con made the trip so relaxing..

Oh, and if you get one, try to find a base model, without air-bags or electric seats... less to go wrong.. the only downside compared with a defender, is body damage can look a bit scruffy, and it will depreciate to nothing, whereas the defender will always be worth something...
1996 300Tdi 3-Door Discovery...

H/D Steering rods, Steering guards, diff guards, discoparts H/D rear bumper, rocksliders with tree bars, 245/75r16 General Grabber AT2's..

Discos aren't bad, you will miss the 90 and the Disco will rot in a lot more places..... inner arches, boot floor etc etc, not as easy to work on and it will continue to lose money until its gets to £500 ish whereas the 90 will hold a much higher price.

The disco has a much better load capacity, rear passenger seating is far superior etc etc

The disco is a perfectly good greenlaner with several plus's over a 90 but at the end of the day it is no 90.....

I've had several but have always come back to a series/90 as they dont have the same appeal

personally Id go for a Rangey with a 200/300 TDI in your situation..... a far better / more luxurious motor

Cheers Steve

I have to say that i have a Disco 300 TDi and love it, very capable standard and a few mods even better. I agree with above it is no defender and in my opinion defenders have much more character. My first landy was a 90 csw 2.25 petrol with the engine modified heads, carbs etc and i bloomin loved it but as we had our first child 90s,defenders etc just were not practical at all. So we went for a Disco 300 TDi which again i like for its refinement and ease of use and all round versatility. As for TD5 v TDi i prefer TDi as easier, basic mechanics but my friend has a TD5 and it seems a lot more refined/modern, but he has it in the garage quite often with one thing or the other.Just my thoughts though.

That's one reason for the TDi, price being the other
I want someting I can work on not a garage, and if I blow it I can replace the engine at not too high a cost either, the TD5 frightens me

no need to be frightend by the td5, its a superb engine, ok it relys on electircs to run it but dont let that put you off at all,
they well proven now in the comp scene and alot more people are moving over from the bombproof 200/300tdi's to the td5
if you want a pic of proof that a td5 isnt fased by water like alot of you think i can soon show you a pic to prove you wrong
i will be going td5 for my next  comp 90 aswel, and i love my 200, but still going td5

go discovery mate, its alot more comfier, and less noisy

discoverys for playdays and greenlanes IMO are far superior to a 90 and that comes from me who wont have anything but my 90

ive been then and been blown away by a discovery simply cos of its weight and wheelbase

just my opinion, but i would sell up and get a disco, look at suggs, disco-v8 and the others    ask them for their opinion

I'm not a Landy man myself but when I was thinking of buying a Disco all my Landy buddies said to avoid the TD5 and go for a good P or R plate TDi 300.

I guess they must know what they are on about as they have all had Disco's for years  :?

Possibly, or possibly not. Like many with "older" landies they might just have herd the rumor that TD5's are unreliable and unfixable, which is tripe - the TD5 was in production for longer than either the 200tdi or 300tdi which in itsself speaks volumes, are becoming popular in the challenge scene who are generally really keen on beat with a hammer to fix mentality cos its easy!

You'll find those who have tried and owned a TD5 love them, the others are just scared of moving forward, its not that complex...even the late 300tdi had an ecu!

and even the odd ones that crop up, dont cost the earth to rectify,
at least there no timing belt to snap on a td5
